Well I did Swan's way y'day.
Parked car by prior arrangement at a B&B near start. Headed to start. Puncture #1.
Start is in Salcey forest, quick stretch, start the route (new maps courtesy of here and route from web - fingers crossed won't need paper back up). Leaving forest into the sun and hit the first of many tracks wredked by horses. Badly chewed then set solid. Glad I have FS and a granny ring. Most of the tracks follow hedgerows - bad news for punctures.
Stunning scenary - it's hot real hot, glad I put some suncream on. Miles go slow as I take it slow in order not to blow up.
Milton Keynes - real test for the garmin. The route is close to the actual trails so some interpretation required. Amazing that such a large city is so bike friendly. I barely have to cross a road let alone go on one. The contrast of the route is hard to read with sunglasses on. Puncture #2 - 2 holes.
A long hard section with some steep hills at Quainton. A million really crap gates to open - made up for by the lambs and their mums.
Lunch stop in Swanbourne, village shop has puncture repair kits and inner tubes!
Get to Bledlow - home turf. Up the pace on the ridgeway. Puncture #3. Getting slick at this. Want to get to the end not just home (10miles from end) so speed up. Puncture #4. Light fading - really going for it. Last 5 miles pretty fast going. End of route. 68.8 miles 7.5 hours. Total for day 82miles in just under 10 hours.
Now to cycle back and get the car............. road I think.

I think some organisers are getting lazy in route selection. A couple of local ones include some sections of nasty A roads as connectors. I think a route that requires you to turn across the start/end of a dual carriageway and then go up the dual carriageway past the scene of a previously fatal cycle incident or which has 8 miles of A road including a bypass is not on.
When you're local you can check for that sort of thing but if you're not you have to trust especially if the routes are posted closer to the day of the event.

Starting to get somewhere but only the .jar file available on what has downloaded, can't see how to access the 'Mobile Atlas Creator.exe'. When I've opened the mobile atlas creator jar file (supposedly for mac only) I get the program but with warning I only have 63mb available because I've not used the .exe program. Some maps show eg OS explorer but not the more detailed ones.

I'm tearing my hair out trying to get OSM onto my 800.
Bought micro SD card and reader, downloaded velomaps Great Britain. Followed instruction on Ride with GPS
Installing Free Open Street Map data
Some people purchased an Edge 800 for cheap because it didn't come with Garmin's City Navigator maps installed. This is fine, because there is a complete and comprehensive set of free maps (wikipedia style user-generated maps) from the Open Street Maps project. You can install these maps on a microsd card, and then use your Edge 800 like normal. Better instructions will follow, but here is the gist.
- *Choose a mapset from this link* - Since I am in North America, I use either *Mantlik's contoured maps or *Dave's
- *You have to enable data recording on the SD card by changing the settings: Settings > Data Recording > Record to memory card. *
- Place a blank SD card in your Garmin, turn it on and then start the timer. This will create the proper directories on the SD card automatically. <
- *Stop the brief activity you just started. Feel free to revert the "Record to memory card" setting once you have started then stopped the timer. *
- *Plug your Garmin into your computer. Depending on your computer, you will probably be prompted to open a folder to view the files on both the main unit and the SD card. Otherwise, navigate to the drive/folder your computer assigned to your SD card. *
- *After downloading, copy the IMG file to the SD cards "GARMIN" folder that was created earlier. The SD card can have multiple IMG files on it and you can choose between them in the Edge 800 configuration menu. I kept my names descriptive, "osm_western_us.img". VERY IMPORTANT: keep the name short and free of spaces or odd punctuation - underscores are OK for spaces. *
- *Once the file is copied, safely remove (right click on the icon in the lower right of screen for Windows users) the SD card from your computer. *
- Insert the card and power up the Garmin. Go to the configuration menu, then System -> Map -> Map Information, and select the map type.
- Enjoy!
No chance - no sign of the maps on the unit.
Any ideas?

I was getting knee pain after about 45 minutes to an hour on my road bike. Tried various adjustments and nothing. Decided to do it properly and went to Adrian Timmis at Cadencesport for a proper fit.
2.5hours of work on the turbo, footbeds, shims. Changed position to 3cm longer, 4mm lower, adjusted seat angle, bar angle, lever position etc etc. Next day 5hours no pain. Best £135 I've spent.

50mile trip around the North Cornish lanes with 1825m of climbing. Navigationaly challenged and no way of knowing if the single track lanes are idyllic and scenic or nightmare potholed, centre grass strip all covered with 2" of cowshit so numerous detours, retraces etc. so not exactly a smooth rythm.
Stuck a large note in my bike shed.
*North Cornwall = MTB - do not take road bike!*
Cross bike would have been good....... and thus it starts

Just got this......
Dear Sir
*Thank you for contacting Thames Valley Police. The subject line of this reply contains a Unique Reference Number (URN) that has been created to record the information you have provided. *
The information you have provided about the vehicle you witnessed driving dangerously has been added to an observations list. This means if the vehicle is seen by Officers it will be pulled over and the driver given words advice about the conduct of their driving. Getting any conviction from the report you have made would be very difficult as the Crown Prosecution Service require certain criteria to be met for any conviction to be issued. The main thing missing in this instance is an independent witness (someone who witnessed the event in the same way you did, but is not connected to you or the offender in anyway). Without multiple independent witnesses the Crown Prosecution Service will not allow the case to go to court. Thames Valley Police does, however, understand the nature of your complaint and knows that the manner in which people drive must be dealt with if they are posing a risk to themselves and others, so you can be assured that the vehicle you have reported will be looked for..Yours faithfully
*Thames Valley Police *As far as I can see this means that literally no rural incident will be dealt with effectively.
This is indeed true. They are so bad I am about to take my paid for wheels to somewhere else as I need to return them and can't face locking my dogs away for the day for the 5th failed attempt at pickup.
