They just put cycling high on the agenda at every level. What can we do with training/infrastructure/law/culture etc. to elevate cycling? Then they do the lot and properly funded!
Christ! They even have royalty poping in (on their bikes!) to deliver the certificates. Can you imagine Kate and Will crusing by to deliver the Bikability badges?
I often think that the "debate" in the UK around training/infrastructure is purely a function of the very low level of investment. The result is that we have to argue over crumbs.

No mention of helmets ot hi viz... really good advise for a change ;-)
-
One thing over lunch, the above reminds me of the relatively frequent occasions that children I coach are sent to school with instruction from parents to keep (their poorly fitted) helmet on at all times, only for me to check their bike and find neither brake works, stem is loose and above min insert line, ditto saddle.
Parents often are fed these "helmets = safe" messages, without similar info about bike safety or rider behaviour safety.
I get this ALL the time.

I have recently dropped the rhyme... "door and a bit more"
Now I ask them to imagine all the car doors are open. Where would you ride?
Seems to work better. I think it's because it's a visual cue rather than a rule to follow. They work it out for themselvs...
10% of casulties result from "dooring" is the figure I have heard.

All thre very best with this! It's needed.
I do hope that firms who are not delivering National Standard training will no longer be able to access the Dft money. We badly need a purge of poor practice. We all know who i'm talking about... Well in London we do at any rate.
As long as firms can sign off their own instructors via the ITO system, there will be a problem. Standards need to be INDEPENDANTLY checked not self checked. Those falling below standard need to change and that should include training standards and standards of employment. As constructed, cycle training does not offer a viable career with most firms. How will we build a professional industry if we are not offering a real profession?
-
I trained the IAM's chief instructor who agreed completly with all national standard cycle training messages apart from one thing
What was that one thing? I gotta know.... ;-)
Can I add the note that the training syllabus is so often reduced, in these kind of conversations, to two points. Primary Position and Keeping up with Traffic.
There is so much more to it which is why even experienced riders (like me!) always say they get something valuable from the course despite their expectations. Skydancer's point about risk awareness is spot on.
-
Because it might put off more experienced cyclists or bruise egos if it feels like they are starting from scratch. Look at the old forum pisstake "have you considered cycle training?" for example".
I have come across a lot of resistance amongst "experienced" riders to the idea of needing "training" in something they think they do rather well... A typical conceit of the self taught, I believe. This is particularly the case with men. Most are surprised at how much good new stuff they learn during training. I know I was.... ;-)
Perhaps there is space for a bit of rebranding..."Advanced Cycling", "Urban Cycling Skills", "X-Treme Psykillin'!!" anythng other than "training"...

Looks like there is not enough space to ride between the track and kerb in any case. Also, if you were near the kerb and wanted to take the lane, there is not enough wobble room for a good look behind first. At least not for less experienced riders. Gotta stay between the tracks really and feel the drivers lazer eyes burning into your back! Smile and wave... Terrible road!

its not that bad is it?
It's worse then that.
full of patronising scolding.... Remember to behave at red lights you naughty cyclists! Despite TFLs own report(suppresed) suggesting that cyclists who obay the rules at junctions strictly, are at higher risk from turning lories... TFL have cut the additional money for cycle training for Hire Hike users too.... They are an evil cabal whose members use ground up children to sweeten their coffee...

Here is a recent Tweet I saw:
Blackpool #sharedspace at night. http://yfrog.us/ng866z http://yfrog.us/7b8h6z http://yfrog.us/bgsjez
My question is, Who has priority?
I believe the scheme has reduced accidents but I am left wondering what happens in the event of one.For example, if a ped gets hit on a crossing as opposed to crossing somewhere else(J walking) it becomes a mitigating factor with respect insurance claims. A lifetime of phisio theraspy is expensive so losing some of that money would be real bad. Use the crossings....
In shared space, would a driver be able to say, "he just stepped in front of me"? If you are hit whilst walking across a signalled crossing on green, it is clearly the drivers liability but in SS it seems to me that liability might be mitagated by as much as 50% as priority is equal (?). Half the cost to repair the car vs. half a lifetime of medical care doesn't seem like sharing to me. Obviously Strict Liability would deal with it but here in the UK we aint got it.
What is the legal highway code position on liability with respesct SS?
Thoughts? Am I just wrong?
Word!
