The frame is now provisionally sold to Hilly Ben upon receipt of payment.
In answer to mig, the alpine scene was painted only on selected frames by the wife of Johnny Mapplebeck, a co founder of the company that became Pennine Cycles. This example doesn't have that touch but instead has finely painted red line hatchings.
See http://www.classiclightweights.co.uk/ which is a goldmine of information for Pennine and other marques. In answer to Pawlus, I'm not certain on the model though it doesn't have mudguard eyes fitted. -
Thanks chaps, yes it does appear to be original and looks like it has been well looked after in its earlier life.
There is a frame number, 2970 stamped on the underneath of the bb shell which may give a better indicator of age plus a gear cable pully and grease nipple on top of the shell where the bottom of the seat tube joins.

Here is a nice Pennine frame that may hopefully appeal to lovers of older steel or to any men of Yorkshire domiciled in Greater London.
I acquired this a couple of years back from Hilary Stone but with always another retro project on the go have decided to move this one on.
The vital statistics are: Seat tube - 22 inches c to c, Top tube - ditto, rear dropouts (marked Cyclo Benelux) width - 120mm and front forks - 112mm. The un named headset moves freely though could likely do with a good clean and greasing and I can supply a replacement transfer for the damaged head tube one. Overall the finish is good with some touching up to the blue paint though I don't think this detracts. With the right sort of kit this could build back up into a lovely looking racer.
I can supply more pictures to anyone interested just in case I have probs uploading more than one on here.
I'm looking for £125. Not overly keen on posting it but can deliver to London Waterloo most days for the cost of my train ticket from near Reading or similar for drive out within 25 mile radius. -

Thanks for that.
Here's another picture showing the complete bike - apart from the badge work there's little to distinguish the frame from any others of its time. I posted a thread on the Retro Bike site at the beginning of the month but nothing so far so any help gratefully acknowledged.Cheers

I recently bought a nice old steel road racing bike on ebay that has S.Roland - Jones transfers and brass head tube badge fitted.
The transfers show an address of 329 Horn Lane, Acton W.3 and the frame fitted with a grease nipple on the BB and Nervex lugs looks like it dates from the 1950's or early 60's. A number of cycle shops in the London area had their frames built elsewhere - Wally Green of Hendon was a prolific builder of frames for such shops who then badged them as their own. This is one name I've never heard of however and none of my older clubmates in the Middlesex RC has any knowledge of the shop either. It is still there, now used by a builder's merchants, located near Acton Main Line station. I'm now renovating the bike and would be interested to know if anyone has any memories of the shop and bikes sold there. I've tried uploading a picture...
With thanks

Thanks for that and appreciated,
I've just pm'd regards that thread. A possibility - though there is a reference on the internet to the cups and trophies from the Silchester CC being auctioned off some years ago. Someone on ebay is currently advertising a Silchester CC badge so that name seems to be a constant.

Hoping someone amongst you may be able to help me out.
Does anyone know what the club colours were for the former Silchester C.C ? (located on the Berkshire & Hampshire border). I note that their club silverware was auctioned off a few years ago..
I have a vintage frame that I'm restoring and it has the club name neatly painted on the top tube. I'd like details of the colours so that I can recreate them on part of the frame.
With thanks
Shaun

Hello,
Very much interested in your bike and willing to travel down to Maidstone if you can reduce the price to £125, happy to pay cash or Paypal. Also would the drop out width permit a 5 freewheel block?
Mal Rees was the founder of my bike club so this is a bike that would be much appreciated. With thanks
