uhhhh it got to this stage thru my own stupidity which ended with the rear wheel being ridden over and then me ignoring the problem (loose spokes) for a few weeks. the front wheel is the same parts (condor hub x condor open pro copy, 32h), built by condor, and is absolutely fine, so was the rear until my, ahem, faux pas.
Aha, well it should at least last you a little while still. How was it ridden over?

preparing my bike for work i noticed the rear wheel was rather untrue. i trued it up okish (+/-2mm verical and lateral) as i'm shit at these things, the spokes were still pretty loose so tension them all 3/4 turn in 1/4 turn increments. most are fine but 3 were super super loose and had about 2mm thread showing where the others had none. i tightened these to about the same ension as the rest of the spokes, wheel seems ok. is this ok? going to get it tensioned and trued professionally at somepoint but in the meantime will it be ok?
Yeh, this is generally the right thing to do. By tightening the really loose spokes you're relieving the stress from the overall structure. Just bear in mind that for this to happen means that the wheel probably wasn't that well made to start with and some considerable fatigue could have easily occurred already at the spoke shoulders. You'll find out in a couple of months if it's time for a new wheel when it starts busting spokes left right and centre.

Does any-one have any decent street wheels they're willing to either sell or swap for some 58mm extra soft halfpipe wheels? Basically, I got them for just rolling around on because they're fast and grippy but a little bit too much - cant powerslide at all or correct a wonky landing so they're not ideal for street.
Need something a little smaller and harder basically...

Yeh, it pretty much nukes it from orbitĀ®. In the mean-time, use volvic. Whatever you do, don't use evian.
When you use filtered water, you should only have to descale roughly every year. Its not something you want to do on a regular basis. This http://www.happydonkey.co.uk/hd0588-puly-baby.html is safe to use with your machine.
Get some puly caff machine cleaner and a backflushing disc while you're at it. I know it sounds like a ball ache but it'll keep your machine working like new for yonks.

It certainly will fuck your machine if you're using London tap juice. Ever looked in a kettle? Now imagine that stuff in a machine that has tiny valves and pumps... Oy.
I just use a brita jug filter, does a great job and are pretty cheap. Its certainly worth doing. In the meantime, order some descaler! And not citric acid because that will fuck your boiler.
How long have you been using it without filtered water?

Bulk aint strength.
the real strong (and i mean frighteningly strong) people are the really skinny ones you find at climbing walls.
