Yeah I do find the internet particularly difficult to find good inspiration, even just image searching for various interior or architectural styles turns up loads. As soon as you type ‘garden’ it’s a shitshow of basic patios and boring lawns.
I’ve just grabbed a couple of those books recommended up thread and they’re great if anyone else is wondering.
Now just to work out what to do with ours…

My partner's starting up a sewing social event and the first one is this Wednesday evening.
If anyone fancies coming along to it to work on their projects, it's just a fiver, is in thames-side studios on the river nearby charlton/woolwich, with two teachers/helpers with loads of experience and equipment on hand. Anyone is welcome, at any skill level, including people who've never used a sewing machine before.

Does anyone have any decent sources/books/websites for landscaping inspiration?
For floor, raised bed materials and stuff like that. We’re maybe thinking corten steel for beds, maybe quarry tiles for floor, but it’s all a bit arbitrary at the moment, and could do with a boatload of examples of different styles.

Didn’t catch your edit:
the notion that we might be able to seize some agency and DIY a way out of this?
Yeah that sounds great. And basically what I think too. But, sadly, this takes some serious effort in real life, not on a couple of politics threads on the internet, even though that might make a small difference (depending on how reasonable you come across)

Possible loosening of the 'debt falling in 5 years' rule, specifically for capital spending:
https://x.com/faisalislam/status/1847176855029244324This could be a very good thing, depending on the detail

Of course I agree with that, and haven’t suggested anywhere that it’s acceptable.
I wasn’t aware of the WHO’s definition and I’m sure many others weren’t either, so it’s hardly bizarre. It’s fairly obvious I was talking about the difference between verbal forms and physical forms in relation to incarceration, but thanks for the correction in terminology.

Thanks maj! Will check them out 🙂
Edit: yeah this looks great:

I did say the bar was “often” too low, so make of that what you will.
I’m interested in this because it’s an area of political theory that I’m not particularly clued up with, hence my reservation to say anything categorical here.
There are good questions to go into at the limits of liberalism and the borders of liberal statehood, and it’s always been a curiosity to me that the early liberals designed prisons in their spare time for kicks. I could probably do with finally reading the copy of J.S. Mill’s On Liberty that’s been on my shelf for ages to be honest and save you all from my waffling posts…

I guess what I'm asking is whether those sentencing guidelines are appropriate, or even applied correctly in this case:
The approach to the imposition of a custodial sentence should be as follows:
1) Has the custody threshold been passed?A custodial sentence must not be imposed unless the offence or the combination of the offence and one or more offences associated with it was so serious that neither a fine alone nor a community sentence can be justified for the offence.
There is no general definition of where the custody threshold lies. The circumstances of the individual offence and the factors assessed by offence-specific guidelines will determine whether an offence is so serious that neither a fine alone nor a community sentence can be justified. Where no offence specific guideline is available to determine seriousness, the harm caused by the offence, the culpability of the offender and any previous convictions will be relevant to the assessment.
The clear intention of the threshold test is to reserve prison as a punishment for the most serious offences.
I'm not sticking up for this person, quite the opposite. I am however coming from the position that the bar for imprisonment is often too low across the board. In discussing cases like this, I might be able to think more clearly about civil liberties in general. The sentencing guidelines also seem as confused as I am:
There is no general definition of where the custody threshold lies.
the harm caused by the offence [...] will be relevant to the assessment

Is your view that they should not face any consequences unless it's demonstrable that their specific post led to…
No not at all, but that would factor into the level of sentencing for me. People say dumb and horrible shit all the time, so the context is really important. In this case the context is a very real risk to life, but words are not violence.
-
To be totally honest, I'm not sure. Direct incitement of the form "kill these specific people" is pretty serious, don't get me wrong. If there's a direct causal link between her words and violence, maybe short jail time, but the burden of proof there is high.
What punishment do you think is appropriate for:
- Saying 'Eat the rich' on a public forum
- Saying 'Eat Jeff Bezos' on a public forum
- Saying 'Eat Jeff Bezos' on a public forum on the same day Jeff Bezos was eaten
- Saying 'Eat Jeff Bezos' on a public forum on the same day Jeff Bezos was eaten, with the cannibal-murderer being a dedicated fan
Edit: I'm not meaning to remove the racist parts of the original case here, just couldn't think of a better hypothetical as a comparison for incitement to violence
- Saying 'Eat the rich' on a public forum

She's clearly a racist loon, but I'm not sure sending twitter edgelords to prison for 2 and a half years is a particularly good move, however reprehensible the content. Surely there's a more reasonable sentence.
Can the murder of the three girls mentioned in the article be directly connected to her post, or were any of her followers engaged in violence? Seems like a bit of a reach to me.
You know what, I quite like crazy paving! It kinda reminds me of my grandma’s garden so I’ve got a soft spot for it.
It does get pretty grey overall in winter though so it’ll probably go
