I was thinking reveal all the checkpoints at the start, make it more about the riding and routefinding than map-reading and searching - but actually that sounds like a pretty good idea. Give each team a random first checkpoint, then the marshall at that point writes down their arrival time and tells them where the next point is..
If you're going to reveal one checkpoint at a time then you'd need to send everyone to them in the same order, or else each team will have a completely different prescribed route and distance to ride. Some could end up being sent back and forth across the city while others get lucky and are given a quick circular route.
But, the trouble with a true point-to-point race is heavy bunching at the start and also everyone just following the leader, so you'd need something to string the pack out before the first checkpoint. This could be achieved by making it a long way off, putting hills in the way, making it hard to find, having a staggered start like a time trial, etc. I'd favour the first two, if anything. Though a staggered start could be interesting, then you could offer the checkpoints AND the order in which to visit them. But, then you lose the bustle and chase of a mass-start.
Lots of ways to do it, I guess.I guess in this case you could give all the checkpoints upfront and also offer a tip that an optimal route describes a moustache shape across the city - that will make people think carefully about where each of the checkpoints actually is in the city and try to plot a route before setting off.

Anyone Have of know of where I can get a cheap 700c wheelset, preferably ready for ss/fixed? I read a few pages back that wilco do cheap wheels, will have to nip in in the morning and have a look see.
Cheers.
You should have read further! Wilco only do wide-ass rims, no 23 mm ones (I'm presuming that's what you'd want).
I doubt you'll get any "fixed-specific" hubs or anything, not cheap anyway. Just DIY.
Have a look at our pals in Cambridge, they sell some fixie stuff: http://www.outspokencycles.co.uk/

They probably didn't mention pedal revs, coz they are pretty pricey generally. Also go and have a look @ the wheels they have hanging up! Most of the are £500+ per pair... Sweet I know!
yea, the cheapest narrow wheels they had were about £140 for a pair, I think.
All the other shops stock the exact same wheel as each other, I forget the brand but I've seen them around and also had some 27" ones from the same source.

I'm also after a narrow front wheel - 23/25mm would be great and looking for something as cheep as chips.
I manage to bust my wheel cycling straight into a curb at full steam... got up, called my mate who i was going to meet that i was going to be late, went home and put on some plasters and took out the spare bike! That was 4 weeks ago and i'm still recovering!
£35 is the cheapest new 23mm wheels I could find - Borwell, Streetlife, Specialised and Velo Cycles all have them from time to time

I always get cheap shit outta Wilco... Their shit sucks, but not in a Halfords "paying through the nose" for shitty shit sorta way!
I've just got back from Wilco and a few others.
Wilco has various wheels but not narrow rims.
Streetlife, Borwell and Velo Cycles all have the same cheapo 23mm wheels, £35 each or £27 from Borwell, surprisingly.
Specialised also apparently had some but haven't got them in stock at the moment. -

I've got a rusty old 5-speed you can have.
If you mean it comes with a block then I don't need that - I'll have to use my old one so it fits the chain. But yea I might be interested, so long as it runs alright and all. Or could be made to do so with a 60p pack of new bearings.
I can make one from some old wood and cardboard I've got in the garage... It'll fail magnificently. I'll even throw in some duct tape so you can attach the cassette.
Wood? Well la dee da, posh boy. When I was growing up we made our frames from plant stems and wheels from clay. Except it wasn't clay, it was just soil from the council estate mixed with our tears and vimto.

Hey kids - I can't start new threads but could someone mention this Halloween Alleycat?

A well-researched and compelling presentation.
I can see the sort of thing you mean now and that would work in theory - but I don't suppose the checkpoints could ever, in practice, be at all equidistant or "equidifficult" from the start.
I just want there to be no doubt or controversy over why I won - it's not that I got given an easier route, but that I am juiced to the focking gills and have a freezer full of my own red blood cells.
