there is a covered bike locking facility just behind the war memorial at Guy's. I can't say I've ever used it but a friend forgot his lock once, kept it in there for an evening and it was still there later on. He could just have been lucky though.
Good to know, thanks. I go to Guy's hospital a lot for my research project, and there are a paltry few bikes racks there which are always full. I shall try these next time.

Velo - are you a philosophy undergrad or postgrad? I did the philosophy / psychiatry MSc at Kings. Good times!
I work in the Denmark Hill campus now, and I always see loads of bikes around the institute of psychiatry, but they're mostly wobbly old beaters. Bit risky to bring a plush bike to Camberwell I suppose.

LOL. The brake cable wound round the top tube is hideous!
I've never seen that before - is this something people do regularly? :/ -

Along Bishopsgate near Liverpool Street at about 1:30 today, a motorbike riders went under the wheels of a building supply truck. It looked very serious, there were loads of police, fire engines and ambulances. I hope the ambulances were a good sign that the rider was still alive.
I'm not sure if this forum is usually used for motorbike accidents, but I hope all bikers will be careful of trucks, particularly if they're heavily laden. It makes them harder to drive and reduces visibility of other road users - so stay well away.
Hope you're ok, motorbike guy. I'm thinking of you.

I'm a female cyclist who has to put up with this crap, even in rural Lincs. As guys, what do you suggest is the best action/reaction to these idiots - ignore, shout back, wave the bird....? I was physically attacked when I was younger so maybe have a bit more fear/reserve than needed but dammit!!! I ride 125-150 miles a week and am not going to let any c*nts stop me...
I have no end of this crap too, particularly if I'm wearing a dress (oh, the HORROR). If you want to avoid it, one thing I have found amazingly effective is to wear a helmet! Wankers seem much less drawn to me when I do, I probably get only half as many comments.
When I do get comments, I used to just ignore them - but I think that this sends a message that you're ok with the behaviour. If you don't object, men think its acceptable to act in that way. So now I cheerfully give them the finger. What I find amazing is that most people look embarrassed and ashamed when I do that - which suggests that they really do know that they're being wankers!

That sounds great - I think it's always useful to learn more. Will, I'll PM you about this, thanks. :)
I've noticed that women riders can be less assertive, more likely to hug the kerbs etc. Perhaps that's why so more of the cyclists who are killed in London are women. But drivers do seem to be more aggressive toward female riders too though.

I was thinking about doing a CTUK course; they sound fun! I like that you get to work on your own bike, and I'd rather maintain my bike myself than have to go to a shop every time I have a problem.
I think there's a discount on the maintenance course if you do some cycle training too. Has anyone tried the cycle training - is it worth doing?
Undibs on the seat post, wrong size.
