the ceiling is quite low in the carpark, I have heard of one person scraping their helmet on the way down from the top.
do the other dix want to get wet tonight?
I am still keen but see it could be a slightly problematic night.
who else would go along?
if no one responds by 5.45 I will make alternative plans for the evening.

The tyre was an easy fix, chain has slacked off a bit after a 50km ride today where the chain wheel loosened off on me so took the tension off till i can get some loctite on those bastards.
Just gotta get a new saddle and it should be a half decent rig, got my eyes on a nice san marco rolls with a touch of gold which should go alright with the chain.PM me, I have that saddle spare.

x-rays are all clear so just scrapes and bruises.
was going across a roundabout and the van driver came up to the junction, slowed down, looked around and just did not see me - so he pulled out and hit the side of me. I think he was as shaken up as me, he accepted full liability and said that he had only just woken up and despite looking just had not seen me.
bike is badly damaged and scratched - will need to get the frame properly inspected, to make it worse had only bought new pedals and saddle this week.
have been to two LBS shops for quotes for replacement parts but need to get the frame properly evaluated as well. as its just over a month old will claim full value for everything
will go and see a fixed specialist shop early next week
plod were good and so were the ambulance people
cheers to all for messages of concern and support
and i am now another cycling statistic

I am currently using Schwalbe Stelvio tyres.
Horatio has suggested I change my back tyre (at least) for the Brighton ride. If so which tyre should I get?
I thought I had bought puncture proof tyres when I got them, though as there are 3 types of Stelvio mentioned in this thread - http://www.londonfgss.com/thread5985.html -though they all look identical and mine just have "Schwalbe Stelvio" on their walls I am none the wiser as to what I have or if they are up to the job.

I think with many of the general public the distance is not the thing they consider when discussing their commute. The measure they concentrate on is how long it takes.
If you ask how long is your journey to work invariably they will give the duration, not the physical length.
My suggestion would be to consider the speed an average person can go without breaking into a serious sweat and then consider how far they could go in 30 or 45 minutes.
My journey time from work has nearly halved from just under an hour to just over 30 minutes since giving up public transport and using a bike (though a shower at the other end is obligatory). I think its about 8 or 9 miles each way.
