i can imagine alan lord sugar probably has anyone who overtakes him shot...
i love my commute up dartmouth park hill on my 79 gear inches of fixed gear bike. especially when anyone who isnt a roadie or on a proper mtb walks. one of the most conflicting dilemnas that i experience over taking someone then deciding to stop for traffic, or just RLJ. fortunately i rarely cycle during rush hours....

clearly technique is important. if you are out the saddle and moving your body up and down you can be wasting energy as the effort of lifting your body up does not necessarily convert into downward pedal force from gravity. im pretty sure ive read that standing up does take more energy but as it uses different muscles it can offer light relief to the muscles that have already been tired from using the more efficient sitting down approach. i would imagine that your riding position (saddle height, frame geometry, stem length etc) and the different muscles that relies on will have the most effect on the difference in energy use between standing and sitting.

im building my first polo bike and have a small (18ish inch) hybrid for the frame. it has 24inch wheels. im thinking of getting 700c wheels as thats the cheapest and easiest way of getting a flip flop hub, as i cant afford to build my own. from the polo bikes ive seen in london 700xc is a bit larger than a lot of people use and i wont be able to get tyre that are as wide for the 700c, so what would people here recommend?
basically, stick with wide 24inch wheels, get cheap and easy 700c wheels or somthing else??

this is a really good shop that ive ordered loads of stuff from before, and its still cheaper than over here after shipping and tax. the website has the address and i assume they speak english from the emails ive received from them before. also great selection of entirely japanese made parts, loads of them njs. -
i agree that substituting player between matches is unfair, if match means 1 10 minute round to reach 5 goals. what i meant by substitution between matches i meant between different fixtures on different days but thats already been answered as we have to keep 2 people the same. id also like to point out that an potential advantage gained by substitutions would be negated by our bikes which at the moment consist of 2 fixed gears built for road use both with more than 70 gear inches and a battered old mountain bike with barely any brakes but hopefully this will change soon. so clearly we cannot accelerate as fast and end up more tired anyway. im not saying that this should excuse us, clearly the rules have to be fair for everyone. we were just trying to get as many people from our uni playing polo as possible and thought that this would be possible to achieve through substitutions. id just like to point out that there was a great atmosphere when we were playing yesterday, everyone was having a great time but if anyone feels threatened by our new team im sure we wil be able to stick to 3 players in future.

sorry our unusual tactic has caused some controversy, in fact rik, non of us had played polo ever before so geting the rule wrong was our fault. is it possible to substitute players between matches if theres 5 of us? im sure some of us could take it in turns to play different matches as long as we still got a chance to play throw ins and play a bit with different people.

thanks for the support, having played polo for only a month, and having no one with any experiance of polo at all it was inevitable that we would be thrashed by los conos. im the only person who owned a fixed gear when we began and no one else had ever riden one. i accept that this doesnt really fit with certain cultural cliches that are associated with bike polo but i can guarantee that everyone from heythrop had a great time. we were pleasently overwhelmed by the friendly and open attitudes of the experianced riders and seeing how its really done just inspired us to play more. i think joe walsh deserves credit for starting the uni polo team and entering us into the league a month later. as it turns out this wasnt a disaster.
rik, youll be glad to know ill be building anther bike bike soon. just when i thought i had enough.

From what I've heard (haven't compared them all myself) the fan resistance turbo trainers which are generally cheaper are louder. Magnetic and fluid resistance turbo trainers are much quitter.
