Most people who are against mini holland seem to be homeowners who have increased traffic on their previously quiet street. It makes their street more dangerous, noisier, polluted and drops value of their real estate. I totally understand where they're coming from. The zimmerframe/parking/loss of business hysteria might just be homeowners trying to think of a less-selfish sounding excuse.
So the real issue is as @pootsmanuva said: How can we encourage motorists to cycle or walk for short trips? Hopefully schemes like mini holland will gradually turn the tide.

Old: This 1990 statue, by Denys Mitchell, commemorates King Edgar's gift of land to his Knights in Cutler's Gardens, Devonshire Square.

I toured for 3 months with a SON28, Theplug II and Dynamo lights front and rear.
It was enough to continuously power my iPhone 5 which was mounted on the bars and using the MotionX app for mapping and pre-downloaded maps/route. I switched off the screen when I needed to conserve battery or charge faster. A sometimes forgotten point is that you don't need network reception or data connection for the GPS on your phone to work - so you can switch off cellular/data to conserve battery, as long as you pre-download the maps.
There was not enough power to charge the phone and have the lights on at the same time, so if you plan to do a lot of night riding then you'll need additional power. I also used a USB battery and charged it at campsites which I stayed at every few days - mostly i wild camped. The extra juice was used when I wanted to do other stuff on my phone when camped for the night. I needed to charge some hefty DSLR batteries anyway so could not go completely off-grid.
ThePlug II only charges at 500 mA which is a slow trickle - much less than your standard 1amp USB socket on your computer. The B&M eWerk has switchable voltages/currents so you could technically charge those larger batteries, but I'm not sure if the hub can supply that much power at reasonable touring speeds, so realistically if you need to charge at >500mA you'll probably want a solar powered setup eg. Powermonkey.

I had these built at Bikefix on Lambs Conduit Street, and have cycled about 2000 miles with them. Comprising:
SONdelux front hub (centrelock disc compatible)
Hope Pro 3 rear hub (Shimano 9-10 speed)
Velocity Dyad rims
Double butted spokes (Sapim I think)
Blue rim tapeI've been running 28s but they could take up to about 38mm tyres. Built in 3x and 32 holes.
The front is true and the rear could do with 5 minutes in the truing stand. Bearings are smooth and the dynamo works well. Brake tracks in excellent condition.
£300
Pick up in Brixton would be best.

How did you bend the bolt? I'll give it a go, but want to make sure I do it properly (without compromising the bolt as much as possible).
Disclaimer: the proper way is to buy the road fork...
The best way to bend a bolt would probably be a vice and hammer. I didn't have a vice handy so i hammered it while holding the bolt over a sharp edge. I first made a couple passes over the bolt with a hacksaw so it would bend straight (this sounds more dodgy than it is, the bolt was only scored 0.5mm).
Obviously this weakens it a little but it's a sturdy steel bolt and has been fine for me.

The Salsa Casseroll might also be worth looking at. It can fit 40mm tyres and is slightly more roady and than the cross check.

30 minutes ago, fixed rider with green socks swooping in left to right, then to the front of the queue eastbound on Farringdon/Clerkenwell rd. You couldn't hold the trackstand long enough so tried to cycle in front of the cross traffic... then had the nerve to give the driver the finger when they didn't give way...

I moved house by bicycle last week. Had to do 7 trips in the end!
