I've checked the clicks and creaks checklist, but this creak is persisting and quite loud.
I've got a creak coming from my handlebars or quill when I pull on my handlebars - so particularly when I'm going uphill or accelerating hard. I've tried to tighten the handlebar clamp and the quill itself but cannot move either even slightly. Does anyone know what sort of things might be causing this? Do I need to remove and grease the quill or something?

I'm in berlin now, and it makes me sad to think of this thread, seeing that most people here have very little problems with just locking the wheels quickly and go into a shop etc. Maybe not for an expensive racer, but for normal bikes for sure.
Feels like it should always be that way. So much wrong about how in the UK cycling comes with all these hassles. Are you trying to say that bikes don't get nicked in Germany? I lived in Leipzig for two years (which is a very peaceful town by any standard) and loads of people's bikes got stolen, so I find that hard to believe. Perhaps it's just that there's so many more bikes in Berlin than in London - in a target-rich environment there's always likely to be a bike nearby that's easier to nick than yours.

That's Hipsterwang!
Hipsters don't have wangs; they procreate through binary fission - like all bacteria.
How else do you think they wear those tight pants? It's like a sort of visual shibboleth; hipster approaches vegan crunk night 'Reality Sex Cross Stitch'; "he's got no cock or balls, let him in".

Show some consideration for other road users, you two-wheeled maniac!

I'm encouraging people to realise that you don't need to wear a helmets to be safe.
Also, the best way to teach children how to ride a bike properly is to let them make risk assessment, during the skyride loop, I saw a kid nearly went over the handlebar and got what left of his testicle slammed on the top tube, he's fine though.
He won't be trying that again in a hurry that's for sure.
Someone has already mentioned the adviseability of wearing a cricket box. In fact, the perfect cycle suit would be: http://www.editinternational.com/images/gallery/bikers2_low.jpg

Hi guys,
I would like to buy my first fixed gear, and I hesitate between two: the Bianchi Pista Via Brera 2010, and the Prima Foffa. I know that they are really different bikes, but I would like to know which one is the best to use after work and during the week-ends to have fun on it. You do not seem to like Foffa bikes, but I would like to have quite an objective opinion...
Thanks and sorry for my english (I am French)I've got a Foffa Prima which I absolutely love; I only have good things to say about it, and I notice that Dani has introduced a lot more options to the Prima builds now.
I really like the Bianchi Pista Via Condotti and had I had an extra £300 odd to chuck at it when I was buying then it would have been a serious contender. Was a bit gutted to see them going for £550 in Evans last week. But never mind -

Harsh tactical quote!
Was refering to the ligitimised sort in east Berlin where the government gave disused buildings to people/projects, and they were expected to repair and upkeep them etc in return.
I do not condone squatting.
Do you mean the Autonomes? I got the impression that they moved into the vast number of empty buildings in E Berlin, and then simply couldn't be shifted out. Everyone was terrified of the Black Block in the early 1990s.
As for squatters, I haven't got a problem with the principal of political squatting, particualrly as utilisiation of housing stock in London is so shockingly poor. I find however that often, there are problems with behaving considerately of others, which I find weird as one would expect anarchists to be good neighbours - 'think locally, fuck globally' and all that. However when I was lviing at my last flat, the old dear next door got carted off due to dementia, and within a few days the most reprehensible pack of eastern european scum had broken into the place and were beating the shit out of each other at 3am every night. Once the police finally went to check it out, they cleared off and we thought the issue was over. However they conned a lovely polish couple into moving in and paying them rent (they told them that they were the agents of the owner), the council then evicted the couple (3 weeks after the woman gave birth) and then lost interest, so some of the scummers moved back in, and it was more of the same, only they now appeared to have some south american prostitutes in tow too who they beat regularly. Last time I checked the house had finally been boarded up (I now live around the corner). So yes, I would be interested in experiencing alternative versions of squatting as my current experience has been poor.

Saw a rider down on Cable Street CS3 today. Paramedics were strapping his leg up and a crying kid was with an adult on the pavement. I suspect that the kid ran out.
About a week ago I saw a similar incident; a small kid ran out from behind a group of friends into the path of a cyclist who, though going slowly, was unable to stop or avoid the collision. The rider in that incident was fine, and the kid ran off wailing so I guess they were OK too. Both incidents occurred within 5 metres of each other, so I think that it's worth being careful there and possibly some education or a fence is required.
Couldn't get the HTML to work, sorry.

That looks interesting. They call it 'laid up' bamboo - laminated, in other words, probably using epoxy. I suppose it's one way around the problem of natural bamboo, which is that the irregular size and diameter make consistent joints (and structures) difficult. Bamboo is said to be stronger that steel, weight for weight. It also shrinks less than timber as the moisture content changes, but it does still shrink a fair bit, and it tends to crack when it does shrink. I suppose their 'laid up' bamboo is kiln-dried, laminated up, then sealed with epoxy resin and polyurethane varnish on top to stop the UV from degrading the epoxy. Which would work, but all that work (and chemicals) might undermine any environmental and economic advantages, leaving an admittedly atractive conversation piece.
People in the surfing world are still waiting on a vegetable-based epoxy so that they can make more environmentally-friendly boards. There was some talk of a corn-based product but it hasn't come to anything yet.My old uni has a biocomposites department working on precisely that sort of thing. Mst of the comparisons I studies were between jute and sisal and glass fibre though, the epoxy was not really covered.

hi wen, if you like the chrome shoe - you should have a look at these.
http://www.missionworkshop.com/footwear.phpthey're the same guys who did chrome but with more experience. This shoe took them 4 years of development. (disclaimer - I did some work for them, but haven't tried the shoe) however I know DJ got a pair - maybe he'll give an opinion?
failing that Quoc does lovely shoes.. he did this collaboration with us for Tweed Run, and I know he does commissions if you're that way inclined.
http://tweedrun.com/?page_id=306&category=1&product_id=14I missed the Tweed Run this year - my new bike wasn't ready in time. will be there next year though. It was through that website that I found the Quoc Pham shoes - and I think that the lovely antique tan is the best of the colours available!

so if you are strapped in riding fixed how will that make it any more easy to get a foot down?
do you actually know what you are talking about
clipless is easier to get out of than clips and straps
Oh, I see where you're coming from. I don't have clips/straps either; I had them on my old bike but hated them. I just have pedals.

Matt, have you thought about submitting this event to BoingBoing? There's a post on there right now about someone's cycling-themed prints.
http://www.boingboing.net/2010/09/14/check-out-these-awes.html
I think this is the sort of event that they'd love.
