There are some comprable discounts on refurb iMacs, at least this was the case a few days ago. There was an i7 27" a few days ago with about £200 off, close to the uni discount.
That said, there is a discount for college student, but I don't know how much, you'd have to get her to access the apple store from the school's network:

Certainly no expert here, but maybe can give you some ideas..
Look at the tcpdump command, you can see what sort of packets the device is sending when you connect it. The arp (apr -a) command might also be handy.
You can start a dhcp server to see if you can assign it an ip, which will give you some indiction of what is supposed to do.. alternatively, connect it to your router - you can then log into that and see if it is assigned an ip. If you can assign an ip to it, you can then do a portscan and hopefully telnet, though you might need a password!
but it might be a serial port, rj45 jack is not necessarily just for tcp/ip..

Someone tailgated me through the barriers on the train platforms at Victoria, about a second later a guy in plain clothes asked to see his ticket/oyster and waved some uniformed transport officers over. Very swift, looked like he just was standing near the barriers looking down the platform to meet someone.

I don't have a retail tiger disk, but should have a grey disc set that came with my macbook.. Can check if you want it, though I'm out west..
But if you just want to run disk utility to check for filesystem errors, I think you could do this w/ a (snow) leopard disk just as well. Clicking noises, not a good sign! Might want to see if you can boot to target disk mode and try to get your files first thing.

i have no internet at home. i use uni computers. they are dell pentium 4 ht, windows xp, 3 GHz, 1.5 GB RAM, IE8. but, IE8 crashes all the fucking time. every 15 minutes. bloody annoying. is there a way i can fix this? (emailed the help people who were most unhelpful)
You could try using a portable firefox or chrome to use from a usb drive or network store.

On the subject of funny bars... those people who rotate their drops in the stem so they face upwards. Looks so funny.
This. I don't get it. Saw a guy with flipped drops and brake levers in the ends of the bars, on the top side. So he was riding holding onto the brake levers as if they were bars and pushing down to apply the brake. Not sure if I've described it well, but was definitely odd/funny.

Anyone have a spare macbook battery that they might want to sell?
This is the second time that mine has died, bloody nightmare!I don't, but it might worth getting a chinese "OEM" battery from ebay. Have had good luck with mine, much cheaper than buying from apple. Has a very cheap looking button to light up the charge indicator, but other than that seems good.

Oh yeah, my favourite was the girl who managed to pick up her Socialist Worker protest sign on the way back from shopping at Uniqlo.
