Hey everyone,
My name's Dan, I'm a volunteer for Wolmar for London, which is Christian Wolmar's campaign to become the Labour candidate for mayor of London 2016.
We’re a team of around 15 people who have worked tirelessly for three years on developing a proper grassroots movement outside of the Westminster bubble.
Christian is a former member of the board of Cycling England, and has cycled over 2,000 miles during the campaign in his efforts to be mayor.
We’ve developed a key set of transport policies, and the following are specifically for making cycling more appealing in London:
- A network of safe, segregated, Dutch-style cycle lanes on major roads
- A 20mph default on London’s roads that is properly enforced
- A cycle bridge (E London) instead of a garden bridge
- Cyclists at the heart of every road junction design
- 50,000 new bicycle parking spaces
- A cheaper and more extensive cycle hire scheme
- 10% of all journeys in London by bike 2020
We now want to sign up 10,000 cyclists to have a say in the Labour’s mayoral selection this Summer.
You don’t need to be a member of the Labour party to vote.
If you sign up as a ‘supporter’ by August 12, then you too can have a vote for Labour’s next mayoral candidate. It costs £3, and your vote will bring us a little closer to a cycling revolution in London.
How to register to vote
- Text Labour to 78555*
or - Visit wolmarforlondon.co.uk/vote
Tell us when you’ve registered, and get others to sign up too.
All of our policies can be found at wolmarforlondon.co.uk - we also need volunteers to help plaster London with our spoke cards. We've already handed out 30,000.
Please feel free to ask any questions, and I’ll be happy to answer them!

A Saturday encounter with a well-known London coach operator.
Hi ****,
We spoke earlier about the two incidents on Saturday 26th October concerning one of your drivers and myself on a bicycle.
The details are:
Registration Plate — *********
6:15pm — Southbound on Southwark Bridge
Cycling with a friend, we approach the pinch point after the segregated cycle lane, right check our shoulder and see the coach emerge over the peak of the bridge (you can't see over, so he had no way in knowing what was on the other side). He was driving far too fast for the situation (I'd approx 35mph), and instead of braking on seeing us at the pinch point, he instead flashed his full-beams and carried on at the same speed. We had to take evasive action to get out of the way.
6:35pm — Southbound on Grove Vale / Goose Green Roundabout / Lordship Lane
Now alone, I'm cycling in the right hand lane as there's an obstruction in the bus lane. Again, I right check over my shoulder, and lo and behold, who speeds up behind and tailgates, but the driver from the previous incident. He did not know I was the same person. He tailgated me to the roundabout, and then pulled wide and shouted out the window something along the lines of, "I'll fucking have you off if you don't hurry up". He then proceeded to tailgate me on the busy stretch of Lordship Lane as I turned off at East Dulwich Grove.
I don't really have to explain the severity of the matter to you, but I really struggle to see why your driver puts his home time over the life of another human being. I find the most chilling part of the situation that the incident was not a one off. This is how your driver sees fit to treat other road users. I have a full driving license, and I'm a careful cyclist. I dread to think how your driver treats others less confident to take the lane in front of his coach.
In terms of actions, I'd first kindly ask for you to look over the CCTV from the coach, as we spoke about on the phone.
I'd also like to receive a copy of the CCTV from the coach between 18.10 and 18.40 on 26.10.20.
And of course, I'd like the driver's name and details so that I can report his actions to the police.
Thanks for your understanding ****,

I really try so supress anger since I saw a bloke pull out a telescopic truncheon and chase after another motorist. The thought of a cyclist facing that is horrible.
happened to me... terrifying

Picked up this Dawes Galaxy off the bay recently in hope to use it as a commuter / cruiser... Turned out to be a ruddy bargain, and in pretty much brand new condition, having done around 200 miles in total. I've only put some on new cork grips from Kinoko and some Berthoud mudguards so far, but hoping to find a rack that'd suit the bike.
Basically I need to get a D Lock and a 15" laptop to and from the studio each day, but not set on a rear rack if a front rack might do.
Seen the Velo Orange Constructeur, but not sold on it, especially as the bikes got all the rack braze-ons so keen to use them. Also tried a few vintage racks on it, but a no-go with the cantilever brakes.
Any thoughts?
