hey all,
I might get the chance to work a cool job in central london (kinda islington) and I was wondering where would be a good place to live? I'm currently in bristol and love the gloucester road vibe here. I'm looking for somewhere quiet and close to night life of the house and hiphop rather than metal variety. Is camden/kentish town the place to be?I did a search on here is east really the place to be?

This guy here might actually be quite a genius. By locking his bicycle in such a manner of absurdity he may be deterring thieves by humouring them instead, encouraging them to leave the bicycle so that others can take pleasure in the viewing the owner's "supposed" incapability with intelligence. Very clever sir...
I think this one wins, it was left over night at the waterloo bike stand...
I love the idea that some thief id going to come along cut the brake cables and then damage themselves severely failing to stop. Shame thats probably not the intention though

Finished my first fixie build yesterday, this morning I adjusted the stem height, went out for a ride took photos and then adjusted the seat position. The frame a a 80's dawes frame that I got powdercoated as it was going to die of rust I've left on all the brazing so I can build it up with gears at some point if I feel like it.

just itching to build a 'sunday' bike now.

I think I may have got confused with the difference between a 1.6kg road frameset for the money I didn't expect cyclocross frames to be 2kg+ for just the frame. is 250 a typo? I'm happy to spend more than that, I'd budgeted 350 but looking at frames I think i need to consider spending more.
how much would be a normal ratio?

I think the steam roller is a little heavy too... thanks though it's definitely on the short list. I have to say I really like the 'All City Nature Boy' just a shame about the colour. The pureblood is just too rich for my taste nice though it is it's not twice as nice as the other's I've looked at, the peace maker is tempting though.

really? have you actually used the search on this site? I have. You get pages and pages of classified adds and not much else.
The most time I spend on a bike is the hour and a half a day spent commuting, seems reasonable to me to want to have a nice bike for that time spent. bikes are to be ridden after all.

What are the current wheels like?
A good wheel is a good wheel. It doesn't need to be a deep-section job, even though people seem to like them aesthetically.
bike arrived today! the front wheel is a mavic open pro on a tigra hub which spins nicely and is true so I'm going to keep it on. I need to choose between a halo aero track and the hand-built wheel from v sprint dp18 on a novatec hubs. I'm leaning towards the hand-built wheel because of the sealed bearings.

I'm building up my first beater at the moment, I have a complete bike i bought from ebay standard 80's racer with 531 tubing and I'm looking at whether I should replace the front wheel as well as the rear. My choices are a pair of weinman dp18's on quando hubs, a halo aero track rear wheel or a hand built wheel from v sprint with a dp18 on a novatec rear hub all for pretty much the same price.
opinions?

**Hey there,
Let me give you a little bit of background first, I've been into bikes for ever but I've never had a fixie before it's always been mountain bikes. I've bought a 1985 12 speed tourer with a reynolds 531 frame and fork, which I intend to do up to be a beater bike. The worst piece of damage is on the drive train with the outer front ring being chipped and having teeth missing. The way I see it I have two choices to fix this bike up I can either replace the drive train and the wheels or I can bodge the drive train to work in a single speed or fixed gear way.
I'm leaning towards the first solution because I can then have a flipflop hub, I've pretty much decided on halo aero rage wheelset because they suit my budget, so firstly how do I work out which type of cog do I need? (I really can't find this on google or here maybe I'm stupid and I've missed something really basic)
secondly can anybody recomend a cheap front ring?

I rode cheap bikes for years, they where heavy and bits broke but the worked and where fun. I've just spent £1,400 on a hard-tail and it's lovely, it's impossible for me to describe how it feels to ride, it's like riding a dragon that does exactly what you think.
If you want a bike to upgrade then go second hand, MTB's depreciate rapidly and when bit's break through use you'll upgrade them. If you just want a MTB to mess around and test the scene on then buy whatever fits, they are all going to be pretty much the same everything will have some weakness. you'll be better off buying a whole new bike when you come to upgrade.
