Coming back to the point about if transport is changing in London. I do think things are changing it is just going to take a while. I live in Fulham and have never been able to justify buying a car. However there are times when you must have a car to do something.
Borrowing a car for a day has got even easier thanks to zipcar and streetcar. If you haven't already take a look either of these services.

I love SF, used to go every year thanks to work, but not been there for many years :-(
Hanging around Chinatown is a must also, so many damn nice places to eat. Also just around Union Square and Downtown area is an excellent place to just hang out.
Definitely worth venturing out to Muir Woods, the are load of bike trails. Bike Routes Map. If your not taking your bike with you there are plenty of places to hire from too. It is also worth venturing across the Bay to Berkeley. There is also a national park fairly close by, Mt Diablo NP (about a 3 hour drive if I remember correctly!) which also has some trails. I agree about some of the other posters sentiments about Pier 39/Fisherman's Wharf - but you can't go to SF and not visit them!
From Fisherman's Wharf either take the Bay Tour or the Ferry across to Sausalito, give you a chance to see SF from the water, plus excellent views of the GG and Bay Bridge.
On the shopping front, SF has everything you could need on Main St or nearby. Timbuk2 used to have a factory outlet in the SoMA which was great for picking up their wonderful messenger bags cheaply. I remember I once bought 10 back for friends and family, got a damn good deal. They now have a proper store so not sure if it still cheaper than ordering online or from other retailers.

I went for the SRAM PC1, seems good to me and under £10, not used it in anger yet, still in the middle of building. Put it on to check the chainline, and rode around the block a couple of times.

I want to vote Lib Dem, but my fear is that it will just reduce Labour's majority and put the Conservatives in. Which is what happened in Hammersmith & Fulham in 2005. Now that Hammersmith and Fulham has been split in to two for the upcoming general election, so its hard to gauge how things will go right now.

@slowstephen - thanks for the tip. Since I'm a big bloke, the frame had me a little worried from the start. Since this is very much my first SS experiment, I'm not that tied to the frame. If in a few months I have to shell out for a new frame that is fine.

Long time reader, first time post. Started my first SS project, a Raleigh Equipe I picked up via Gumtree.
Waiting on a few components to arrive, but so far so good. The plan is to get this down to Amourtex in the next couple of weeks. Will post again once it is complete. This site has been invaluable in working out how to do things. Looking forward to making it to the West London meetups soon!

@GA2G - I think he has already sold it I believe. It spent more time with a mechanic, than actually with Jezza.
