I live on the estate next to where the accident happened. The bouquets and messages of condolence have gone up on the railings on the central reservation by the pedestrian crossing. The lad, known as TJ (about 17 years old), was knocked off his bike by a hit-and-run driver in a stolen car, given resuscitation at the scene but died around midnight.
There's complete press silence - well, apart from the traffic delay websites - on this one and I had to see the bouquets before I believed the accounts I'd heard locally. 5 pm on a Friday afternoon is clearly a very bad time for getting any interest from the press.
RIP TJ

Seeing as you guys were riding past the bottom of my street in Deptford, I had to pop out for a quick look-see. I'd hoped to take photos but the ones I took were an epic fail.
Still, the guy in the lead (with a white t-shirty-type top, I think) was happy enough to give the 2-hands-in-the-air victory salute as he passed the 7 mile marker on Creek Road. It was only by half-a-bike's length but he definitely took maximum points for that stage...
EDIT: oh, and yes, a nice night for a ride!

Spoke to the PC at the scene for a while. It was a girl and *apparently *she ran the red light. PC said the girl was doing ok.
Hmm, different PC, different story. If she ran the red light then the HGV did too, just before it ran her down. It takes 2 to right-hook - if they're both moving they've either both jumped the lights or lights had nothing at all to do with it.

Just a little update: the police were doing a reconstruction of the accident this afternoon using Stella's bike, which was undamaged in the accident, and the actual lorry (not an articulated vehicle - a medium sized DAF). I spoke to the deceased's sister for a while and she told me that Stella was a very experienced cyclist, also that because her nearest hill, Maze Hill, was too steep for her (it was a very chunky-looking MTB and she was 67), she used the Woolwich Road to get to the gentler Westcombe Hill for her regular destination of Charlton Village.
Somewhat surprisingly, Stella was not caught in the drag sweep of the lorry but went under the front nearside wheel.
If it's any consolation, the police seemed to be taking the reconstruction very seriously, with driver line of sight photos and theodolites and all sorts of other gear. Let's hope it leads to a fair and just outcome.

Hi, I just registered to post the latest news - I live and cycle round this part of London. The online site ''greenwich.co.uk'' has this as its latest post:
''I am sorry to say that the 66 year old woman died on Thursday 10th Dec. She was a popular local recently retired careworker and will be sadly missed.''
Note: it's not confirmed and there seems to be nothing at all in the local press but I can't imagine that someone would go out of their way to post that message.
Sorry to be the bearer of what looks like very bad news. This junction is just one along from where a woman, Adrianna was killed by a hit-and-run HGV in May - I'd just heard that someone had been charged in connection with this and, almost immediately, there's another one down.
I've asked the Crossfields Tenants Association whether the Sue Godfrey Nature Park just by the accident site could be used to commemorate TJ in some way - perhaps a tree planted in his honour, but any ideas welcome. It's got to be a more tranquil place to remember someone than on the railings in the middle of a dual carriageway and I'd rather something living than withering on railings. Sue Godfrey, a committed local naturalist, died some 20 years ago under the wheels of a left turning lorry in Catford.
