Bernie Sanders (who would've won)
Just joshing (kinda)
IMO there is a fundamental misunderstanding not about what Real Left and Real Right is, but rather the fundamental orientation of the country. The UK and the US (the US more so now than when I left in the Bush Jnr years) are fundamentally conservative countries. I think it's the Left's delusion that we live in a liberal country run (or ran, whatever) by Conservatives. They are conservative countries run either by liberals or conservatives, depending on the era.

That working fathers need more time for messing around on their bikes in the woods. There are two or three rounds of EKCX left on the calendar, I am hoping they'll get a day out one one of those. Otherwise the rims are more than capable of ensuring the tubes maintain pressure in the tyres adequately, but beyond this they haven't had a Rad Day Out yet

No that makes perfect sense! I was just curious. I run a bit colder these days so I feel you. Out here if it's below 4 then I'm pretty wary of getting out but generally that requires pretty standard layers. Would have to be nasty nasty cold to layer like that in Kent. Having a gritted road loop is v smart though, will put one together!

Hello friendly fixie people, HDIJ is up for 2025!
I'm feeling good and am excited the ride next year. A few lovely forumers Jay and Leo are running Moderate Days in prep for January. The first one was ace and I'm sure the next two will be as well.
After the kinda brutal lumps of last year's ride, we're aiming for flatter and flowing fixed group work. Again it'll be extending past the 90 miles for an imperial century but as always to commemorating the ride @clubman did in 1959. I think we all appreciated seeing you on the road and in the pub afterwards Chris!
Totally new roads for HDIJ, we'll be starting in Roydon for a loop that nicks a few TNRC lanes. I'm not a big Essex Lad but Roydon is well served by fast London trains and means that we'll be in the Good Lanes in very short order. If there are riders travelling down maybe they could get a slice of generosity from London's friendliest forum and be offered a place to crash the night before.
This is intended as a fixed gear / single-speed ride and as it's probably not even "rolling" you'll be fine on the gearing of your choice (as it's not track gearing). It's a mid-winter ride so is not supposed to be a smashfest, but I was hoping for some tight group riding, chasing that elusive, much maligned but actually totally real and completely amazing 'flow'. Mudguards are welcome but not required, however rumours suggest the roads are a bit mucky so the guardless may find themselves at the back. You'll definitely need lights.
A few of the details below aren't totally confirmed (or have dropped as the fellow kids say) but sticking a date in the calender means it's something to look forward to.
Start time and location
Leaving from outside Roydon about 8:30. I will see if I can get a local cafe to open up early for us but if not then it might be an unconventional start at Liverpool St station and we all leave as soon as the 7:58 from LVP Str. arrives in Roydon.Lunch
Cowshed Cafe as run by forumer @rpm - I'll drop you a line closer to the time with a heads up :)Finish
Pub tbdRoute

Well that was a great ride. It was wet yes, but actually by the time I had my double puncture (FOR SHAME) on Beddlestead it wasn't raining that much. Sorry again for the delay on that one. @Glws I owe you a tube! I'll PM you. Long-ish train and 6am kiddie management meant I didn't get my spares packed sufficiently. Thanks for your patience. Happens to us all I guess!
Great lanes though, I was saying it was nice to go over the ridge but not descend to reservoir but rather play around on the top. Uber autumn, wind and leaves and rain sprinkles. As others have said it was a little shock to the system, I had to run up the steep bit of Sundridge. Amazing carrot cake at the cafe near the bottom of Star Hill.
Capital M for Moderate though :)

I went into the brompton shop to borrow a hex key to fix a rubby mudguard on my normal commuter (the mechanics were not impressed but gave me one anyway, thanks!) and I saw some G-lines IRL. They are big. Sounds dumb but the internet makes them seem small. The package is not small. A folded g-line is not your diminutive 16' brompton.

You're too young for a new bike. People in their 30s and early 40s should be required to introduce a spacer stack first before laying down deposits. I know you don't really have any exposure to the bike industry so you can take my word for it. I have you know I have one cheap fixie and an expensive bike no one likes

What does 'further left is not of the left' mean?
