Now, i know these things are a bit marmite but ive always found them interesting and recently picked up this frame. It was a whole bike but with nothing nice or interesting on it, so i thought i would do something with it. There was one for sale on here a while back that i thought was quite pretty in a weird kind of way.
So, im going to get it repainted. The paint is quite good but not a colour i like and it has someones name painted on the top tube. Trevor Jarvis is still operating (his business partner now builds the frames) and has agreed to repaint it for me. After checking frame numbers it turns out to be the 5th frame he ever built back in 1978! Probably going to be light blue but not 100% sure.
Im guessing it was originally a tt bike as its only got 1 gear lever boss and has zeuss track dropouts so im either going to build it up like that or might build it up fixed, not sure yet. Also might not go totally period on it maybe mixing parts although i would like to take it to the eroica brittania so might be modern retro-ish ....
Lets see what happens.

Ive just come back from doing it last weekend. Absolutely fantastic. We were a group of 12 with very mixed abilities and so started late friday did 20 miles, then 40 on saturday and 40 on sunday.
The terrain was maybe a bit harder than i thought it would be, no really technical stuff but a great mix of terrain and surfaces. Some very steep shortish pitches probably over 30% but all just about rideable on my 36/30. The second day was wet after heavy thunderstorms and some of the flinty white clay was very slippy.
I was riding my Boardman cx bike with heavy but reliable Schwalbe land cruisers (no punctures) and had no problems although it was a little jaring in places. There was a fantastic descent down, i think Buster hill which was like a grass ski run, perfectly smooth and i hit 45 mph.
Loads of lovely pubs on the way which we took full advantage of but i would love to do it again in one go. Maybe next year! -

Eastern League go;
gridded vets
ungridded vets
gridded women
ungridded women.the juniors race in with the seniors and the women start 1 minute after the vets. all seems to work pretty well, not too chaotic at the start. Round 5 was in Welwyn Garden city last saturday on a tough but really interesting course. great fun

I got an email a few weeks ago from a bloke who was apparently driving behind our club run and objected to us riding 2 abreast. Among various complaints was that we were aggressive bullies. He also thought it was too dangerous for us to be on the roads and that we should "think about the impact and distress on drivers who run over cyclists"
He wasnt taking the piss either! As club sec. i wrote a strong but non sweary reply. With another club mate in hospital with a broken leg after being deliberately run over its no surprise that we sometimes get just a little bit fucking cross. -

Whilst I agree that jailing this driver is unlikely to make a difference to how he will drive in future, it remains that the message the sentence sends out is that killing a cyclist is nothing more than an inconvenience to a driver so long as they really didn't mean to do it.
The comments of the defending barrister are what really gets me though. "There but for the grace of God go I....the sort of accident that can happen to anybody" legitimises killing cyclists as just one of those things that happens nobody, not even the guy who took his eyes off the road for 9 seconds at 70mph is to blame.
Longer rant here http://icycleliverpool.co.uk/2013/06/21/its-friday/
LoveloBicycles, you are so right. This sort of attitude makes my blood boil. There was a similar one to this a while back (cant remember the names now) where a speeding driver who admitted dangerous driving was overtaking a cyclist while there was oncoming traffic, realised he couldnt fit through the gap so killed the cyclist. The judge said the driver had no case to answer as it was just bad luck that the cyclist happened to be in that spot at that time! WTF!
RIP Mr Grayson, champion.

I go there sometimes. Its is largely flat and there are recently remarked trails, blue and green that are essentially just cinder roads or sandy tracks that are suitable for kids. then there are a couple of red trails and the longer one, called something like "limekiln trail" that has a mix of tight tree sections and some interesting bombholes that used to be part of a black run and are good fun.
Its very sandy and last time i was there very muddy in places. Its absolutely perfect for cross bikes. I had great fun eating mountain bikers and you definately do not need full suspension there. -

High viz, (much like helmets) is a red herring when it comes to safety and just another stick to beat cyclists with.
If you want to wear either then that's fine but it shouldn't be necessary to of drivers are following the highway code. This is covered in rule 126:
At night, your stopping distance is thus defined by the range of your headlights. i.e if your headlight beam is 50 metres, you shouldn't be travelling over approximately 48mph.
I think that is so true and it does worry me that we might end up with the contributory negligence thing...yes the driver was dangerous/ on the phone/ pissed but you didnt have hi viz on so its sort of your fault.
I was in Belgium the other week and no one was wearing hi viz or helmets and there were lots of bike about. -
YES! Let's get Blighty Cycling!!!
However, if you are crushed, maimed, or left for dead by a motorist then rest assured that British law will do sweet FA for you and it is your own fault for riding a bicycle.
This. until the law forces drivers to treat us as legitimate road users and not some pesky pheasant then we are all fucked. I guess im thinking about cycling in the country lanes really but any amount of fancy cycle lanes, hi vis clothing, polystyrene on your head etc means nothing without protection from the law. Until the law changes were going to keep dying and getting maimed.

We have the same problem at our club grass track since Islabikes stopped making the reiss. We set up this to try and persuade them to fire up production again.

My 3 series criterium which i bought in 1989. Its had 3 resprays (last one with the wrong transfers) all sorts of different bits and i road raced on it for over 10 years. Still one of my favourite bikes. Super stiff, super harsh. I switched from mountain biking to road in the late 80s and everyone took the piss when i bought the Cannondale, it was all skinny steel at the time. Within 5 years fat ally frames were everywhere. They were way ahead of their time.

Thanks Hippy,
Some pointers towards "external Iliac artery endofibrosis" which seems to describe my symptoms well and apparently is reasonably common in cyclists. Better see the doctor or just stick to a bit of track and the odd sportive, dont fancy surgery much apparently a Barloworld rider died after post surgery complications to correct this. -
Thanks Tiswas,
The numb toes is just the warning and isnt shoe related, if i dont sit up or back off the leg muscles fade and i lose all feeling in my legs. I was thinking blood because if i sit up or stand up i get like a warm wash feeling and feeling comes back. The nerve bundles idea is interesting though. Ill probably have to find a decent sports physio.
I didnt take any pics of the bike built when i got it, but it wasnt great, cheap weinman brakes and unbranded tatty rims etc. It had been converted to run a double chainset with a band on front gear changer and the rather ugly (in my opinion) front mech adapter that goes on the vertical tube. i wont be putting that back on.
i know what you all mean about the paint and it is a bit more scruffy than the picture might suggest but i am going to paint it. I might have resisted if TJ wasnt going to do it. I promise to give it a decent build, hope you can forgive me :)
