Who would have thought it - I just renewed my home contents insurance, and it covers all of my bicycles both inside and outside the house.
Don't sweat it - no cuntery not inferred.
Not too much, at any rate.
Outside the house i.e in the gadren though I'm guessing?
Also, from what I got from reading you only get 10% of the bike, which is 40-50.. I'll buy a rat and train it to guard it for that :)

Right,
I'm new here (all of 16 posts!!) and I'm building my first fixed gear and it's almost done and I got thinking, do people actually insure these, I haven't spent a huge amount but everything apart from the frame / forks (although significantly modified) has been bought new, it's cost me in the region of 4-500 quid.
I know people have spent a hell of a lot more than that, but do people insure their bikes?
If so any good companies..?
Cheers
Simon

just to be sure, does the frame fit you?
Yeah it's pretty big, I can't remmeber the size of the top of my head though and I don't have anything to measure it here.
I bought it off aa good friend who rides a fixed, he said it'd be fine - I trust his judgement :)
It was the first question I asked cause I'm pretty damn tall!

What was your method? Wet'n'dry with some polishing compound?
I'm asking, because I've got an anodised 3TT stem with nice Moscow bars - they also have elaborate embossed logos, but the finish is dull. They're NOS, so I don't want to scratch them up and prefer to take it slowly. I can't really chuck the stem into some kind of bath with caustic soda, because of the rubber seal on the front (it's the kind of hinged stem which opens up). They're Aliminium those
But I got some 240 grit and just blasted over them with one of those mouse sanders. I was careful around the embossed bits but I did go over them.
Then I used 1200 grit and like you said wet and dried them about 4/5 times and then finished them off with some metal polish which is like a abrasive compound - I can't remmeber the name, I borrowed it off a mate, I know it's expensive but it did the trick!
This is during.. as you can see I wasn't shy about it, I took a lot of the metal away lol
I did take every blemish off I could - before I thought I might have gotten white finger from the vibrations haha!

I only guessed as my dad's mk2 is the same age :P
They do come up often but you got to be quick if it's a bargain otherwise ebay :P Just keep an eye on this. I've seen 50 people online at 5am sometimes browsing that!
Ah cool.
And noted... I'll set my alarm. I have been looking on ebay but I have no idea of what's any good
The car if you're interested..
:)

Is it a Mk2 golf that you drive?
Good luck in finding your parts :)
Good guess, and you'd be right but it's a Cabriolet so they ran to '93 along side the Mk2's :)
Thanks, I've been speaking to a lot of people about wheels, didn't think they'd be so expensive to be honest, I don't want rubbish - but I'm not looking to spend £100's at least not on my first bike anyways!
Do they come up for sale often?

Thought I'd post up a few pics of my project.
This is my first, been doing it about 3 weeks, want it on the road for winter as I'm getting unfit (mainly through drinking copious amounts of jack daniels on weekends) and my old golf doesn't like the cold weather.
So here goes..
This the frame I started with.
Dropouts were already cut off..
So i got some welded in..
While I was at it I had the rear hub shortened to 120mm, all the holes i didn't need, for the badge, rear brake bits and bottle holder have all been smoothed.
The frame is currently at shot blasting / powder coating, it'll be back this week, it's gonna be green frame with brown forks.
While it's been away I got these off a mate for £5.
and made them look like this...
Now just waiting on some money to buy some wheels and the other bits and bobs as I have nothing :D
I'll keep updating as it goes along if anyone cares haha.
It'll be nice to have something that's "mine" at the end of it

Alright guys, just found this place.
I've just recently started building a fixie over the last week weeks infact, bought an old rayleigh steel frame off a friend with some bars, adjusted it to suit by weldng in horizontal drop outs / change rear hub width to 120mm and smoothed all the un needed parts (rear brake, badge, bottle holder ect) It's at shot blasting and powder coating as we speak.
I'll hopefully get it back before the end of the month and I plan to use it daily over the winter getting to work and back (only about 5miles each way) as my 23 year old golf hates the cold mornings.. almost as much as me!
So i'll be on the prowl for bits as I have nothing else but a frame and bars!!
Si
It's definitely a fixie, and yes it me.
