Station at 08:10:
Having heard about problems with the trains in previous years I decided to rent a car, load up with post ride goodies, drive up Sat afternoon to dump the car and take the train back in time for the start.
...it didn't go that well. It took bloody ages to drive up and take the train back, especially with trains only going once per hour. I didn't get to London Fields till 22:45. Many thanks to the guy I spoke to at the pub who gave me a route card and allen key. Finally reeling in some flashing red lights in the countryside felt great. Got to beach just before 7.
Driving back I fell asleep at the wheel every time I encountered a red light... don't think I'll do that again.

That's how I ride my racer when I feel there's a low risk of needing to brake, and if I'm not really pushing hard. It's a more comfortable, higher riding position that's easier on your back and neck, and allows yourself to see and be seen better. It doesn't take that long to switch positions and braking is shit with 23mm tyres any way.

I switched last month. Spent 10 mins on the grass in a park with no problems, then moved up to a quiet road and duly fell over in a heap. Haven't fallen over since, but am still struggling to clip in sometimes.
My advice for first timers during their first 20 miles:
1) Expect to fall over at least once.
2) Try it on grass first for 10 mins or so, then move up to quiet roads...
3) Wear gloves and cover your elbows and knees to save on cleanup.
4) Avoid carrying valuables. -
I hate those Lucas Brunelle videos. The ones shown at BFF urban shorts were just fucking stupid. Fucking stressful, yet boring. Shite like most of the US films in that screening except Made in Queens - boring oh-so-earnest oooh look at me I ride a bike, wow big deal. Mostly the other films had humour, and CONTENT and were brilliant, like the polo ones and the stupid bird one, and actually the scraper film was good too). Even the tricks videos were entertaining next to the alleycat ones.
I have met my polar opposite. I went to urban shorts to see Lucas and found the Queens video hilarious. I was interested in the polo one but it could have been much better. Scraper bikes was just a bunch of kids slapping breakfast cereal labels onto their bikes...

That guy's rubbish. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUTL3oKOCNw
for how to do videos. -

+1 for Wiggle. They noticed that the post is dodgy in London right now, but they're so hell-bent on getting stuff to you in record time that they've switched London deliveries to City Link till the situation resolves.
+1 for Condor too. Competent service and excellent range. Wish my route to Gray's Inn wasn't so unpleasant.

Free to collect from Narrow St (Limehouse), used front and rear Shimano 600 Ultegra derailleurs FD-6400 and RD-6400 from 1991.
I'll list it here for collection only; if I don't get a response within a week I'll offer postage.
Pictures show the used parts alongside identical NOS parts for which I paid more than I care to admit. The new parts are not for sale.
The rear derailleur works nicely, despite heavily worn jockey wheels. New wheels are cheap if you wish to replace them. I filed off the stickers for anti-theft.
The front derailleur may have suffered from lack of use; it seemed stuck before I took it off the bike, but this may have just been the cable, or cleaning it might have fixed the problem.

I have an 853 Weigh and a C59. The Weigh was the best purchase I've ever made - have done 7500 miles on it, rock solid reliable while not too heavy, lovely to ride. When I'm on the C59 on a flat road I miss the train-like quality the Weigh has at speed - seems to retain the energy you put into it. I still hugely enjoy riding it and much prefer 853 to lesser steel such as 531 - it's smoother and more titanium-like. GLWS and enjoy the new one.
