if it's only a tiny bit of play and nothing bound as you tightened it up it's probably ok.

aero spokes make naff all difference aerodynamicly and are a lot more expensive and a bit more fiddly to build up (twist over the length of the spoke) so that for an everyday bike they're not really worth it. On top of that if it's a really deep V they might not have any short enough in stock and don't want to order a box

I'd put money on the pop being the death of a ball bearing, time to strip the BB or replace if it's a cartridge.

if you're anywhere near london-on-sea I can do it at cranks - or better, teach you to do it!

I have had a few of those on various mtb's and they're a great fork considering the internals - if you put lefty technology together with that anti-dive you'd have an unbeatable uber "fork"
