Having a second lock (not cable) is a good idea, after having wheels nicked once I like to lock both wheels as well as the frame. Losing one or both wheels costs a lot to replace. Lots of thefts are by opportunists who won't be lugging power tools around, they can easily nick unlocked wheels and components or cut cable locks with cheap portable tools. A couple of locks and a disc-alarm may make a pro-thief move on to an easier target. Ball bearings in allen bolts also works well, use magnetic or glue-gun to get them out easily or superglue for best security. I'd only leave a porn worthy/new bike locked up in public for a few minutes or within sight, use a beater/inexpensive/unfashionable bike for pub or work (unless you have insurance or deep wallet).

Bait-bikes work well in York, but thieves let off with fine and suspended sentences:
"Officers were able to track down their property and the thief was caught and taken before York Crown Court because he was on a suspended prison sentence imposed for injuring a baby on its head.
Bashir Ahmed, prosecuting, said when Coolledge received the 36-week jail term he was allowed to walk out of court....decided not to make him serve the sentence."
"She said the thefts were minor offences. Coolledge had taken the bicycle with a view to selling it for parts."
See this also, again no jail time:
http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/news/5066276.York_bike_thief_snared_in_police_sting/
"police walked in on him later the same day as he was respraying it black at his Huntington Road home in a bid to prevent its owner recognising it. He had two other bicycles, one of which had also been resprayed"

If you catch someone stealing / riding your stolen bike, is it possible to make a citizens arrest?....
It's very hard to prove bike theft as the thieves usually claim to have bought or found the bike. You also need proof of ownership to reclaim a bike, keep receipts, take pictures of your bike, record all the individual parts and serial numbers, register it on immobilise.com and print out the certificate, report bike stolen as soon after it happens as you can. I would not try and arrest a thief, either threaten to call police unless you can take bike, or lock/take your bike (it's not worth dying over a bicycle so walk away if violence is likely).
From http://inspectorgadget.wordpress.com/2007/03/03/waterloo-sunset/
http://www.towerhamletswheelers.org.uk/campaigns/stolenbikes_bricklane.html
"One of the reasons that the police have a problem proving that a given bike is stolen is that the generally speaking the quality of theft reports given by owners when their bike is stolen is very poor. Typical examples are to describe the stolen bike as 'Men's mountain bike, blue'. This is just not that useful when you want to PROVE that a bike is stolen!"

The one in your picture looks similar to the LMA-2:
http://www.dicta.com.tw/samp_all.htm
To remove if no two or four pin notches for a removal tool:
"remove the cover, clockwise!
let the bearings fall out all over the floor.
clamp the remaining guts in a vice and undo, or rather find the vice wont grip it nicely and begin to grind two opposite flats on, till a vice will grip and undo it.
finally learn from the mistake and only ever fit a freewheel......."http://www.singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/cheap-dicta-freewheel-removal

This old vid shows well why cable locks and unhardened cheap chains/u-locks should be avoided:

They list it under powersport vehicle protection.

Lorries/HGVs/LGVs killing cyclists: an appeal to London listeners March 22nd, 2010 by Jack · Comment
Last Thursday, on what felt like a warm, sunny first day of Spring, I was witness to the immediate aftermath of a collision involving a cyclist and a 32 tonne articulated lorry. It was a truly horrible, chilling sight. The lorry was stopped in the middle of the road and the crushed remains of a bicycle were clearly visible under its wheels. The cyclist, a woman in her twenties, was on a stretcher, receiving treatment from the fantastic and heroic paramedics of the London Ambulance Service. I gather than woman was was taken to the Royal London Hospital with serious leg injuries. I don’t know the extent of her injuries and whether she’ll be able to make a full recovery, but while she was desperately unlucky to be hit, she was probably very lucky to have survived.
Too many cyclists are being killed each year by lorries on the streets of London. Something has got to be done.
The Bike Show has been campaigning on this issue for years and this year I’m planning to crank up the volume. As a first step I’m encouraging everyone who can make it to come along to Critical Mass this Friday to join a mass ride that is going to show London’s cyclists making a united stand on the issue. I’m not the greatest fan of Critical Mass, but this month, with spate of deaths caused by lorries, I’m making an exception. This is a call not just from me but from a united platform of London bike campaigners and bike bloggers (including the London Cycling Campaign, Southwark Cyclists, ibikelondon, Bike Tart, Moving Target, Cycle Chic, Cyclodelic, VeLo City and Real Cycling).
If you come along on Friday, you’ll be among friends, you’ll be able to put a few faces to familiar Bike Show voices. Meet from 6.30pm on Friday 26th March on the South Bank, right under Waterloo Bridge. -

It's still listed as Bicycle Gold on Sold Secure which is silly, as Captain Cropper videoed them being cut easily with £30 Machine Mart cable cutters back in 2007.

To: Letters,
Subject: Customer Service - New York Fahgettaboudit® U-lockThe New York Fahgettaboudit® U-lock is your best lock for use in London, but unlike the NY STD U-lock is not on approved list of most bike insurers, is there any hope that it will be rated by Sold Secure, Thatcham etc. in the UK in future?
Kryptonite's Reply:
I believe we are in the process of doing that now

Sent a comment to Sold Secure, there response shows they probably won't be putting the Fahg mini on the approved list, they even suggest it's an old obsolete model when it's not. Will send a comment to http://www.kryptonitelock.com/CustomerService/Contact.aspx and see what they say.
Its says this on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bicycle_lock#cite_note-ctc-0 "Each model of lock tested requires an initial payment and ongoing annual payments by the manufacturer of several thousand pounds."
Message I sent:
Why is the Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Mini [18mm] U-lock not on your approved list? This is the lock people in London have found works, it also gets great reviews. See Locks that work thread on this forum:

The Kryptoloks did not get great reviews:
http://www.slate.com/id/2140083
"The Kryptonite KryptoLok showed some heart, but with the right tool even Lois Lane could bust it. It took me less than a minute to break through, since the steel in the shackle is so soft and vulnerable."

Any opinions on this: http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/accessories/locks/product/granit-chain-110-16378
I would not use an open shackle padlock, something like the Squire SS50CS is tougher. Don't know why the Evo mini and Fahg mini are not on the sold secure approved list when 18 other Kryptonite products are, I've never seen the series 2 mini lock on sale in the UK.
