Would it be ok to drill it out there and then? I'm still finishing my cellar and doing some rewiring so using it a lot at the moment, but was thinking I could just drill it outside the pub?
Well now that I've got it back from the shop I'm not sure that will work at all. But I'll bring it round this evening and at minimum pour one out for my poor little frame.

Hmm. I have recently sheared off my downtube shifter bolt. Does anyone have, perhaps, a drill I could borrow? With a left-handed bit maybe to get that shit out? Or other suggestions/ideas of where to take it to get it sorted? I took it to the nearest bike shop last week and they weren't able to shift it :/
-
Well, I'm not doing anything else with it. The mechanic I took it to was of the opinion that easy-outs don't work a lot of the time and thought he'd try the same idea as Hilly Ben, drill a slot for a screwdriver.
And in the meantime, I'll have to source a new bolt, or pair thereof I guess. I have a full New Success group and would like to keep it that way. :/ Seems a bit much to buy a new pair of shifters when all I need is one bolt.

oh that's what's sheared off!!
will need drilling out, if you drill the inside of the stuck in bolt the outer edge of it will come to bits hopefully saving the thread of the frame braze on
Yeah. Observe:
Did you know a NOS pair of these costs £60? Cause I didn't. I mean, I don't need a new pair, just to sort that bolt out, but I thought I'd check it out. Anyway, is it possible to get at that bolt from the other side of the frame?

you can get a new d-wing by buying cheap shifters, or buy a new shifter set. Simplex retrofriction are great and will probably sort out the initial front mech problem too. Sachs, Suntour, Shimano 105. all are cheap. You probably need a new set anyway.
Well, yeah... but it'll probably be a right job getting the rest of bolt out of the... whatever you call it, the inside of the thing that sticks out of the downtube.

I've been trying to sort out this issue with my front shifter/derailleur (not sure which is the problem really) to no avail.
For reference: They're Sachs New Success, downtube shifters, 6 speed, don't know if that matters since it's the front I'm having issues with. I've got a double chainwheel. I have the limit screws adjusted to what looks like the right limits; it shifts into the big ring fine, but it just won't stay there. It springs right back as soon as I let go of the shifter, putting me back in the smaller ring. Is my spring too springy? Cable too tight? Any other ideas?
Thanks!

Here's my new project:
MBK Super Record, bought from another forumenger a couple weeks ago.Was in quite good condition when I bought it, except for the tyres:
Pretty sure that's the original rubber, probably 20 years old or so, and I reckoned the rear was in bad shape but would get me home. That popped up in the intervening 3.5 miles.I also reckoned tubs weren't worth the hassle, so I found another pair of Mavic MA40s, but clinchers this time, on Campag hubs.
Other things that need to be done: It had an almost full Sachs New Success groupset, only thing missing was the brakes (it came with Weinmanns). Found a pair of Sachs NS brakes on ebay, it includes aero levers so I'll be swapping those out soon and will finally be able to spend some time out of the drops.
Also, I'll be using this for commuting so white bar tape will start looking like shit in roughly 6.3 seconds, and the brakes I bought have black hoods (the Weinmanns had none). Also my arse doesn't agree with that saddle. So both the cockpit and saddle will have to be black for the time being. Shame since they do look so nice in white :/
It's pretty likely I'll have to resell this in a year when my visa expires, so when that rolls around I'll take my sensible black commuting gear off, put the white saddle back on, redo it up with some nice white bar tape, probably put the tubulars back on (since they have the New Success hubs in, keep the gruppo together you know). Should be properly nice.

will the aurora borealis be visible from this high latitude?
I've seen them from 47° north and we are at 51.5° here, so there you go. Anyway I may be able to make it, though not totally sure so I'm not adding myself to the list yet.
I'm curious though if anyone has a 15mm socket wrench I might be able to borrow? I need to remove this pair of cranks and can't get my normal 15mm spanner in there.

Hey... to be honest I don't have time to go to the post office today. Never posted a bike before either so I don't have a frame of reference. If you want to buy it today I could leave it with a friend in London for posting or pickup or whatever, just let you sort that out with him.
Yeah it's fixed/free. Right now the stock 15t sprocket is on the freewheel side, just for storage. I don't actually have a freewheel or anything.
They want me to pay £10 to swop 3 articles of clothing? get to fuck.
I might be down, depending on how long it takes for my delicious roasted tomato soup to finish cooking and making its way into my belly.
