which go pro package is best for cycling? would probably want to mount it to bag straps for commuting, and possibly head cam for mtb.
how resilient are they? does the case tend to take the impacts and just need replacing (really hoping this pertains to mtb use)
There are lot of mounts for the GoPro - so you could mount it on the stem, bars, forks, frame (depending on tubing diameter), wrist, chest, helmet, head etc. However, I'm not sure how you'd get it on bag straps though. The chest mount might be an alternative, if you can't bodge it. For commuting, I use a roll-bar mount, beneath my stem.
The cases are tough in my experience (waterproof too) and they protect the camera well. I've dropped the cam on the floor at home a few times without the housing and it is still fine. If the housing does get borked, you can just get another.
MTB-Idle has some good off-road film and stuff relating to the GoPro here:
http://vimeo.com/user593256A Contour would be another good choice.

Don't think the Hero2 takes 64GB cards though? The biggest volume SDHC card I could find was 32GB, but if you know of bigger that works I'd like to know!
I'd forgotten that GoPro recommend 32GB cards only. I have tried a 64GB Sandisk SDHC in my Hero and it worked. That said, I am not actually sure if it will write past 32GB as I've never tried it. Has anyone else?
I don't bother with the 64GB card as I rarely need more than the 32GB and if I do, I usually just swop 32GB cards and batteries over at the same time.

I hate that video from bbc, the block who smacked the van is a prick, me being a cyclist would want to not be very pleasant to him.
The magistrate found the driver guilty of careless driving and a public order offence. However, your view that the cyclist is a prick is duly noted on the internet.
can buy an additional battery with double life.... for 50 quid. ouch.
It is pricey, but you can just buy a spare battery for less than half that and swop it over (it only takes 30 secs).
If you use two batteries, you ideally need a 64GB card though.

What's the deal with the new GoPro models? What's the best option?
The HD Hero 2 has better quality HD recording (it's markedly better in low light situations than the original HD Hero). However, it's still quite a lot more than the original HD Hero and if cost is an issue, the earlier model is still fine for commuting duties.
If you want a GoPro without the 1080p option there is the Hero 960 - but I don't have any experience with this model.

@pdx - Will has given you sound advice, but if you're really bored you could look at some of my defensive cycling videos:
http://www.youtube.com/user/MrOrigamist/videos?view=1
They're pretty simple and far from perfect educational tools (dull, I am afraid), but hopefully you can learn from my mistakes and those of others as the situations are common ones. It's only 10mins of your life that you won't get back again.
It may seem like a litany of fuck ups, but don't let that deter you!

This isn't on topic or probably even relevant, but the talk about cycle lanes and junctions reminded me of some cycle lanes I don't really understand in Worthing, and since I'm visiting today I took a picture:
It's like this all down this road (which is busy in rush hour), little cycle lanes just across the end of side roads. There's even one further down the road that is narrower than my 42cm handlebars.
For many years, cycle lanes would stop before the mouths of junctions in the UK - this was Department of Transport (as it was then) guidance at the time. However, in light of more recent research this advice was changed as a number of studies found that generally, coloured cycle lanes painted through junctions led to fewer cyclist collisions. It's considerably more complex than that, but that is their raison d'être.
There are not cycle lanes between the junctions, presumably due to limited road width.

james, bit difficult when primary postion is full of cars, its bumper to bumper in the mornings but yes you are right
When they put in the CS along that stretch it changed the traffic dynamic. Previously, the majority of mopeds/motorcycles would filter on the right, as I generally would, but the introduction of the 1.5m cycle lane meant that this moved cars/vans/buses further to the right, making filtering more difficult due to the volume of oncoming traffic. Now, far more motorcyclists/mopeds filter on the left as I generally do (albeit, not usually in the CS). The Jeffry's Road junction highlighted in the photograph is a problem, but I'd also be careful of the garage a hundred metres further back as vehicles occasionally turn into the forecourt.

Had a quick chat with brompton tech department, and am currently waiting for them to reply to the email I sent following a conversation with a nice guy there.
As I could expect / already knew, despite their good reputation, and despite my good ol' "Le Brompton" celebrating its 20st birthday (exactly now, it was manufactured in may 1992), there is nothing they can suggest appart from getting a new one, or getting a old shitty brompton as a part donor (we know that doesn't exist unfortunately)... He even advised against swaping the faulty frame part, argueing that other parts may start to fail shortly (handle bar support, rear triangle, etc...)
I can't let it die like this! Who knows a really good welder? I know, the answer is UTFS, but...
I am sad sad sad...
L
Twenty years is a good innings for a folder, but I feel your pain, veLLo. My Brompton died young: 1994-2003 (seat tube failure). I then got a Birdy Red and the same thing happened after circa 2 years (got the frame replaced under warranty and sold it on). I also had a fixed Trek folder and that lasted 3 years until the seat tube failed (again). I think there might be a pattern here...

I'd recommend posting on the JISC CYCLING-AND-SOCIETY Research Group Discussion List or trawl through their archive as they might have some pointers (if you've not already done so):

Sounds like an interesting project.

That was me this a.m., I saw you on the lung-searing ascent that is Balham Hill. I think you were wearing a lfgss cap? Didn't spot the bike...
The blue and white Solo gilet gives me a way - Des has one too...

No idea if the cyclist is on here but if you are I got the registration - HD54 LXO - and am prepared to act as witness if you need one.
This was me. I'm a new member but have snooped around the forum for a while. Thanks for offering to be a witness. I already had two cyclists and a bus driver as witnesses who each confirmed the licence plate as you have quoted it. Sadly the police have said they can't identify the driver so aren't taking it forward. This seems odd to me given that they have a licence plate, it was a minicab and had a fare in the back. Worst news is that my beloved Condor Pista is a write off. I'm very upset by the whole thing but trying to move on.
Blackandblue - really sorry to hear about this. If you need to borrow a spare bike, PM me. I was only recently thinking I had not seen you for a while in Kennington.
@upstart - Good man for offering to be a witness. I think I've seen you riding along CS7 in the Tooting area. Do you have a black Dolan?

Taypet has time to bib his little horn but chooses not to brake? Silly sausage.
If you set up an Air Zound properly you can brake and hit the horn (wih your thumb) at the same time.
This video has more of the lead up to the incident and it's clear that the cyclist does wipe-off speed before the collision:
