Rapha was a junior cycle racing team in the 1960s, designed to prepare young cyclists for a career in the professional team sponsored by the St. Raphael drink brand.
‘We broke all the rules when we chose the name,’ says Mottram. ‘When I was in branding I would advise my clients never to use a name that somebody else owns and never to use a name where you can’t get the dot com web address. In the end, we did both. We had to buy the brand name, but it works so well visually and with the brand values that nothing else would do.’
It's a bit unkind mocking Rapha for aping Raphael when they did it right. It's also a bit nobbish of Scheybeler to criticise Torm in a petulant Tweet. Making fitted jerseys with back pockets and sporting strips isn't particularly new, and the details like the zip cover are very visible on all manor of other products. Those baby sleeping bags have had them for years, for instance.
Still - never get in the way of the internet producing a Torm in a Teacup.

Now I realise this isn't particularly hipster and frankly I've never had much time for the man but many years ago Mick Hucknall did this on TGI Friday and I've been listening to it every now and again since then.
Skip to 5:50 for the tune. Some say it's not live, but I think they're just haters. It remains one of the standout vocal performances I've ever seen. With a visibly gobsmacked Jools Holland and a bopping Peter O'Toole looking on it's a splendid 3 minutes of anyone's time.

So the tour has started. Huge thanks to Lenni for the bike bag loan - I will shove it in the post in Cologne.
Annoying tweets about the tour can be found at

I'm getting the train out to Cologne from Hither Green to meet up with three others. They left for Berlin on their bikes two weeks ago.* They are currently cycling from Cambridge out to Berlin, then onto Marlburg where I meet them and we all cycle back to Cambridge through Cologne.
I'm doing all of this on a Trek District.* I'm a bit nervous about the hills east of Cologne, but I reckon Jelly Babies will get me through it.

I saw the first one, and thought it was a bit of a mid life crisis version of Into The Wild.
That film covers the adventures and fate of an out of step guy trying to find himself. He does some fairly risk aggresive stuff, then shoots up to Canada for the Winter.
Worth watching if you liked the C4 Guardian version.

**Bontrager Race Lite Hardcase 23c x 700c
**This is all a bit subjective as I don't really have any point of reference.Grip 8/10
I'm quite staggered at how well these grip. I bottle it well before they do in the corners. They've never let go, and I have great confidence on road metal.Wear 7/10
They cut up pretty easily. I do about 75 miles a week on them, and I super glue them about once every six weeks.Puncture Protection 6.5/10
I get a flat about every 6 weeks. It's always glass - every time.Comfort 6.5/10 ?
I ride at about 8 bar, on an ally frame and carbon forks. My saddle is not a mattress. Maybe the tyres are uncomfortable. I reckon there's a lot more in the chain I could blame.Weight (or perceived rolling weight) 8/10
Light like floating leafSpeed (rolling resistance) 8/10
Nippy quickAppearance (or Looks, if it comes in colours) ?/10
Black contact, grey side walls and orange flash. I like them.Price N/A
They came on the bike.Skidability N/A
Single speed.Overall rating / opinion 7/10
I think they are very good. I would prefer to have them cut up less, and glass appears to defeat them. I am going with Schwalbe Marathon Plus 25c x 700c next, so I'll write that up when I'm back from Cologne - should be around 400 miles on them then. -
