Always had good service and delivery from Charlie The Bike Monger.
He shouldn't be on the bad list.
If anything he should be on the "goes the extra mile and is a big positive part of the bike community and is actively personally involved in the world of bikes so therefore really good" list.
He's a real person with a real shop. He really rides a bike. He really has a a passion for bikes.
All GOOD.

...has anyone actually had a rim break on them before?
Yes. After hitting a pothole on an already weakened rim. Luckily it was a back wheel and just about held out and didn't collapse. Yours looks to be on the front wheel though? I wouldn't mess with dodgy front wheels. If they go then your steering is gone or worse you go over the bars.

Good stuff.
Like the way the shot lingers when he hangs the wheel up so gently at the end. You just know that someone's going to buy it and ride through some massive potholes though.
Impressive stuff to be able to tune tension in a work environment. I always struggle to be able to hear unless I'm building at home in the peace and quiet.
A nice vignette.

Thanks guys. I've been waiting to ride my bike for nearly a year and a half. Now, finally I can get out there due to your excellent mathematical assistance.
Now if I can just shed the 17 stone I've gained sitting at my computer refreshing this post in desperate hope for the last 18 months I'll be able to get out there and ride.

Do you have a copy of the CCTV or know that a copy will remain intact?
Go as official as you can. Report to Police as you might need a Police report number if any insurance companies get involved.
I recently had a case dropped where a bus driver hit me and drove off. The Police didn't think it would be successful if taken to court despite my having photos of the driver and bus and a positive witness statement from another bus driver who was travelling behind us at the time and saw the whole incident and told the Police that the driver blatantly hit me and drove off.
It's amazing how quickly something that seems so cut and dry can turn into parties involved not playing ball. Get everything down on paper and reported through all the proper channels asap.
She is a "professional" driver yet still managed to nearly drive a huge bus over you on a small bike. That's not right. You might view it as a mistake but a foot or two further and you'd have been under the bus too, not just your wheel. If people aren't reprimanded enough for these incidents it sends a message that it's ok and next time someone might end up with less of a lucky escape from a potentially deadly incident.
Good on you for keeping it calm though. Not easy to do in these situations. Very easy to let the adrenalin and survival instincts kick in and go over the top. Glad you're ok.

I've messaged John about the Retrobike thread as I wanted to clear up a few of the inaccuracies stated their by Jonny / Roberts / Lopro, but the thread is now locked. Hopefully the follow that I messaged him with up will be added by someone who has mods powers on there. I'm going to paste it in here too as I want to keep everything out in the open and plain for all to see.
As follows...
*Hi,
My name is Adam. I work at the Bristol Bike Project. I was trying to reply to Jonny Lau in his recent Thorn listing thread that he posted under the name Roberts but have found it locked. If you have the power to add anything to that post please can you post the following from me in case he is checking back there. I'd like to clear up a few of the inaccuracies he stated about the situation between him and the Bristol Bike Project.
Hi Jonny,
Adam here from the Bristol Bike Project. We've been in touch via PMs on the Trackdropouts forum and met a couple of weeks ago when you came in to the workshop at the time you acquired the Campagnolo Bottom Bracket and Shimano crankset etc from us. Just to clear things up in case there's still any misunderstanding...
I have mentioned to you in my PMs that we'd appreciate it if you returned the components you got from the workshop. If you want to give a donation for the workshop use and our help fitting those components than that is up to you too. I have informed you that we do not have a Paypal account and that donations are usually made when in the workshop simply by putting any money you wish to give into the pot. Both Jamie and myself invited you back to the workshop a few days ago but you didn't make it along.
So once again, we'd appreciate it if you'd like to return the components. The components were fitted to your bike under the impression that they were for you to get use out of. We're not in the habit of supplying people with parts with the intention of them being sold for profit on ebay etc. We could quite easily sell for profit through ebay ourselves but choose not to as it's not what we or the community around us is about. Any donations or money we accept go towards covering the rent and keeping us sustainable as we receive zero funding and it's a totally volunteer run setup.
If you have any questions please contact me. Please also let me know when you will be visiting the workshop to return the components.
Thanks,
Adam
PS. For others following this saga, this whole situation is something completely outside normal occurrences at The Bristol Bike Project and to be totally honest something we could really do without. In the couple of years we've been running we've been overwhelmed with the good nature and enthusiasm of everyone who has been involved with the project and really pleased that it has continued to run so well. For anyone wanting to know more about the Bristol Bike Project please visit our website at www.thebristolbikeproject.org and watch the short doumentary film at http://vimeo.com/9469007
Also, if anyone gets time then please help keep our friend (originally a service user and now co-volunteer), Abdul Aziz (featured in the film linked above) from imminent deportation back into the hands of the Taliban and most likely a violent death by signing the petition at http://www.petitiononline.com/A1359943/petition.html
Many Thanks, Adam*

"The DfT report also includes a valuation of the cost to the British economy of all the death, misery and destruction that occurred on Britain's roads in 2009. That figure is £15.82bn the cost of quite a big war, by comparison the financial cost to Britain of fighting in Afghanistan from 2001 until now is put at £10bn."

In the past I've used my voice to say "ding ding". People sometimes even find that amusing. Also informing them you've just had your bell stolen can earn you some sympathy instead of grief.
Or just actually use a bell. I've got one on a bike that I tend to use more as a utility shopping bike on routes that involve shared use paths.
