That person didn't die. She has a suspected brioken leg. There was another incident a couple of days before where the cyclst involved died. That brings te total incidents in Bristol to an unusually high four on one week. And thats only serious newsworthy incidents.
The incident in the photos happened on a road layout that people in Bristol have tried to get changed and warn other cyclists about for a long time. It's a two lane road at the lights (around the corner from the photos) that has a cycle lane on the left of the left turn lane for traffic. Lots of cyclists will use a cycle lane when they see it assuming it is the right place to be and is suggested as a safe lane by whoever designed it. Quite clearly whoever designed this one as never been on a bike or thought the layout through.
I think the person who took those photos and the person who runs that blog is doing so in order to try and get the message out to people that you don't always have to use cycle lanes, they're not automatically safe and some are actually dangerous, encouraging cyclists into places where they are in danger.
There isn't really much around to inform people of the hazards when navigating HGVs or even other left turning traffic at the moment. There's no public awareness camaigns or adverts etc and there's unlikely to be. The main way people find out about hazards is through word of mouth / internet or through depressing news stories of injury or fatality. Sad but true.
There are plenty of people out there who know how to look after themselves on a bike, but there are also plenty of naive cyclists too who are riding unaware of how to look out for themsleves.
It is possible to avoid danger on a bike, but the word / knowledge needs spreading somehow, and government / councils right now seem more concerned with putting money into unrealistic romanticised posters of idylic cycling in our cities than offering simple advice on how to stay alive.
There* is* a way to do this without portraying cycling as dangerous. Leaving it to the news stories and tradgedies to spread the word will make people think cycling is dangerous. Educating, spreading knowledge and addressing blind spot HGV issues so that the incidents don't occur in the first place will actually make cycling safer, resulting in less horror stories, resulting in less people feeling that cycling is dangerous.
Edit: Ps. yes in that google street view grab the traffic lights are turning red with cars blocking the box junction and stopped in front of the ASL. That is fairly normal and usually busier for this junction and cyclists will filter down the left when traffic is backed up. At least the cars aren't in the ASL I suppose.

I've been over the bonnet of a left turner. He overtook and turned left immediatley with his windows misted up in the rain. I don't remember a lot of it but a few weeks later I found a business card in my wallet. Then it came back to me that the guy in the passenger seat had told me the driver was an idiot who shouldn't have been driving with fogged up windows and was a bit of a crap driver too. He'd given me their business card to get me to complain to the company. I must have hit my head or something and been concussed as I couldn't remember a lot of what happened.
Always best to assume the worst. Don't assume that not signalling left doens't mean they're not going top turn left.
Importantly ride well out from the left of the lane you're in. Hog the road a bit. It's safer even if it does piss the occaisional person off.
Getting in to an arguement with someone is never really going to get you any where. If they're prepared to argue with you it's very unlikely they'll back down and agree with you. Even if they know they're in the wrong.

Local news in Bristol did this the day before "Bristol's Biggest Bike Ride". They chose a route that was dual carriageway between Bristol and Bath. Not suprising the car won.
They chose a dual carriageway that ran a few miles?!! What did they imagine would happen? The car floored it at 70mph the whole way. Nice one local news.

if it's like the Bristol scheme then you need to register in advance and pay £10 to join. Tourists can't just pay quickly and use them.
Renders them a bit difficult for the casual tourist / visitor, which is a shame because that's one way it might be useful, especially considering the hassle of getting bikes on trains sometimes.

The Paris scheme is different to the UK ones in that it's primarily an opportunity to gain public space for adverting and just happens to be using bike hire schemes as a front to get that. Great if it works.
We have one just started in Bristol but it's also not based on the advertising supported model. Instead its backed by "First (read that as 'Worst') Great Western" who run (read that as strangle and extort) Bristols public transport, some council money (taxes) and money from University Of West Of England (taxes too). Hmm .. why would First Great western want to be involved and then not allow a hire hub to be insalled at train stations they operate from? Almost as if they don't want it to work?
Apparently there was a lot of interest from J C Decaux and Clear Channel in backing it. Wonder why?
It's not surprising to hear that the Paris bikes are vandalised,left in disrepair etc. The bike scheme isn't reallyJ C Decaux's real interest, it's the space they get through backing it.

Contrary to what they say there are actually lots of flat areas in Bristol. I would say that 90 percent of my journeys by bike never encounter hills. Of course it is possible to find very steep hills if you want to in Bristol.
If Hourbike fails in Bristol it won't be because of the hills.

There is a council/police CCTV camera on Rosebery Avenue junction with Laystall Street
I'll pass this info on.
Looked on google maps walk about (I'm in Bristol now) and there is a CCTV camera on corner of Laystall, but if it's pointed the same way at all times then it's there to watch the double yellows on Laystall St, rather than Rosebery Ave. Worth a try though.
Good idea about cams before and after with and without hubcap.

I highly doubt he was being serious, he was saying how motorists tend to view cyclists as a point to show that generalisation is not the right way to go.
As we rode home we were both very aware of Black Cabs around us for obvious reasons. Have to say half of them were very courteous, stopping slow moving traffic to let us out of junctions etc , but others were too close, too fast, cutting us up etc. So yes, generalisations don't work, generally.
Any form of transport is going to have it's fair share of inconsiderate self important tw@ts, even pedestrians (ever had someone walk into you whilst texting?). Just some of them are less dangerous and less likely to use the brute force of a few tonnes of metal as a threat.
We were both actually suprised that a Black Cab driver would hit and run like that.
Looked around a lot for CCTV but couldn't see any. Also got photos of injuries etc. Having read the accident thread on here before was really useful to be a bit prepared. Without the reg though it is going to be difficult to do any more than report it and get it added to statistics. Keep kicking myself that I didn't ride after the cab as he would probably have been sitting at a red light round the corner. Not what goes through your mind though when your friend is lying in the road bleeding.

Can anyone offer any advice / help. I've found the " What to Do in Case of An Accident" thread and it's really useful but wondering if anyone has any experience of accidents where the details of car weren't got because they drove off?
RIding with a friend along Clerkenwell Rd yesterday a Black Cab in lane to carry straight on suddenly decided he was going left and swiped my friend left into Rosebery Ave, clipping his bars which flipped him sideways sending wheel under cars rear tyre and dragged him along on his side. His hub cap popped off in the process making lots of noise, lots of dust and dirt and the cab raced off leaving him lying in the middle of the road. I was just behind and luckily there wasn't any major traffic following so I managed to stand in the road until he could get up.
We think there may have been passengers in the cab too.
All the evidence left was the cab's hub cap.
As for the bike, the front wheel was a right off, twisted stem, lots of scrapes. Helmet, scuffed dented on one side (thankfully not his face instead) He suffered badly gritted hand, scrapes and bad bruises up arm, bruised swollen foot, cut ends of fingers, general bad bruising and aches all over.
Phoned Police immediatley and as we only had one other guy who stopped as witness who only managed to see for definate the first LF03 of the reg and thinks the rest might be OX? the Police said if they attended there's not much they could do apart from fill a bit of paper that would lead nowhere. They suggested if he still wanted to report it then to visit a Police station later.
Very nice lady dropped bandages and wipes and stuff to clean up etc out of her window above but saw nothing.
Bike was sorted out immediatley at Brick Lane Bikes, new wheel etc as he found it hard to walk on his heel, but was ok pedalling.
I've sent a link to him for the "Accident" thread and the TFL report page too. Trying to get him to do those and report officially to Police. I've got a fairly sure feeling that none of it will lead anywhere without full reg plate though. At the time the last thing any of us thought about was getting the reg as the driver was gone so quickly and we just wanted to check he was ok and get him out of the road.
Has anybody got any advice or had any experience of hit and runs with no details? Is there anything he can do?
I want him to find out if he can claim for new wheel, repairs and broken helmet from TFL with just witness reports and no reg details.
Also, I'm guessing I'm not an independent witness as I'm his friend?
I know it's a long shot with not much hope of getting anywhere but if anyone has any ideas / experience that led to something please chip in.
