Can't get pictures ATM as i'm at work and don't ahve a lead for my camera phone, DOH!
Was just looking at some new pedals on the internet and noticed that some have this allen head on the inner but it is part of the pedal thread, so should i be turning it the same way as the spanner, meaning that it is there as an installation/removal aid?
-
OK so i have sorted everything i wanted to sort on my old 1976 Raleigh frame and am using it as a daily commute and everything is fine, but i really would like to change the pedals!
Now i had a look at them and they have the flat on the outer side to fit a spanner on, but also have an allen key bolt on the inner side?
Now i am aware that they will be tight after possibly never being removed since the 70's and i know that one side is on a reverse thread but i had a quick go at removing them and they don't budge at all.
My worry/question is this; Does the allen bolt thread into the pedal on a normal thread and is it's funtion simply to hold the pedal on in case of it working loose?

After putting new 700C wheels on my Raleigh i need to get rid of the old wheels as i need the space!
Basically they are a pair of 26" wheels that were originally installed on my 1976 Raleigh frame. The front wheel has been sprayed satin black but is not in the best condition (chrome was pitting and the bearings are on their way out/gone) but the rear has relatively little play and the Sturmey Archer 3-speed hub works a treat - i have been running it on my commuter for the past month or so without problems. Again the chrome is not in the best condition but the hub cleaned up nicely.
I have no idea how much these go for if i'm completely honest, but offers around £30?

Well i came across this way of converting to SS by accident after i saw the kit on the Evans website. Getting a SS or flip flop rear wheel build is not cheap as you probably know, and then my issue was that i'm on old 26" road wheels (1976 Raleigh) and wanted 700c size which means a new front wheel also.
I have heard of ppl simply using a shimano 6 or 7 speed cassette without the derailler and simply installing the chain around the cog that sit best in line with the chainwheel - this does of course restrict you to a cog which is probably not the best for SS though!
As for wheels - yes they are definately cheaper to buy either s/h or new - I am getting a set of 700C "sport touring" wheels from Decathlon - £45 for the pair with q/r and shimano freehub on the rear wheel. Should do me for now until i can afford a BLB special, and they have to be a damn sight better than my goosed wheel bearings that i am coping with atm - i have 10mm of play in the front wheel lol!

I am getting a cheap set of 700c wheels to go on my old Raleigh this weekend and want to know the cheapest way of sorting a SS out on the freehub. I know i need spacers and a cog, but the only thing i have seen so far is the "single speed conversion" kit from Evans for £26...
Would buying a £10 7speed cassette and ripping it apart work as i'm sure i've read that somewhere before?

Hmmm, i was worried that for £200 the frame would not be the best quality, and of course i was reluctant to order one without seeing it in the flesh. I do like white frames as i want to go with some bright deep-V wheels to provide a contrast and make the bike stand out ;-)
A lot of the new frames have some gash decals or are in really shitty colours.
Any ideas where i can see the above two frames around London?

OK, so i'm looking at building up my own SS bike from scratch. A lot of the frames i see new are massively overpriced or look horrific, but i have come across the Tifosi Pista CX frame which is £200 for the frameset.
My question is - has anyone any experience with Tifosi and will this frame provide a good basis for a SS bike?

Cheers for the help Jogger! Yeah i have read most of Sheldon Browns website in a mission to learn as much as i could (i am new to road bikes and SS, but the London commute and some of the awesome bikes i see have got me hooked!). It all seems like too much hassle as it will require sourcing various parts and fiddling about until they work at the end of the day.
I think i may go with sourcing an english or italian threaded BB frame - any suggestions on what to look out for so i don't end up with another "black sheep" frame?

Hi all,
I have an old 1976 Raleigh with a 3-speed sturmey archer fitted that i stripped, sprayed and added some drop bars to. I really want to convert to SS (it is useful having the gears with the look of a SS bike, but tbh the wheel bearings are goosed and i need new wheels at some point anyway) but i don't know if it will be worth all the cash? The main problem atm is that i want to replace the BB and get coterless cranks, but as it is on the old Raleigh 26tpi thread it would mean the best part of £150 before i've even started on a Phil Wood BB...
Any ideas/suggestions ppl?

Dammit - i'm glad you said that - i really don't want to be taking the crank off as its cottered and i'm a bit dubious as to it going back on again tight without sourcing some new cotter pins... Didn't get a chance to have a go lastnight, looks like a weekend job!
