That sucks. I feel his pain and will keep an eye out. I have had 2 bikes nicked in Kings Heath and know about loads of others. I reckon it is someone local who knows what they are looking for and follows cyclists on nice bikes. A friend of mines bike was locked to the wall in his entry so they took just the wheels. Another had the brackets removed off the wall so they go equipped with tools.
If you have to leave bikes outside or in a shed D lock them to something solid to at least slow them down and increase the chance of catching them.
When my Insurance replacement decent bike was new I locked it to my bed when I was on holiday in case we got burgled!
Don't steal bikes bro.
PS could it be here? http://www.fixmystreet.com/report/73362

Thanks to everyone who came out, It was a grand experience.
No doubt we'll do it next year and if you can't wait a full year there's always the (full) london marathon that our brethren have ridden. How many turned up?

just checked the weather and looks like its raining!
has anyone suggested the ncp car-park above toys r us if NIA doesn't work out? its not amazing but its sheltered and seems pretty quiet for central town.
theres gotta be a golden car park for polo somewhere in or close to town....do i take all bullrings car parks are no good? does millenium point have underground parking?? if anyone fancies an evening ride somepoint to cruise round town in search of the golden car park, holla.
As we were leaving the NCP car park above ToysRus the other Saturday night at midnight 2 security guards emerged from the lift. I think they were surprised by us riding past and told us to get out of there. I decided to it would be better to let them know we weren't doing any harm and were only there to chat and enjoy the view. As I approached to talk to them, the eldest who was about 70 raised the crowbar he was carrying and said "now don't do anything silly sonny". I stopped out of range of the crowbar and told them why we were there, they said we should leave which were doing anyway but they wanted to know how we got in. I calmed them down ( I think the old guy was surprised and scared at first) and then went to catch the others up. As we got to the exit the shutters were coming down but there was a button on the wall which raised them so we could get out.
Even if you find a suitable car park with empty upper levels you may need to clear it with security first, otherwise beware old blokes with crowbars!

I doubt it. Very sad. As a parent of kids who cycle this is my worst fear. Another teenage boy got killed in Sheldon a couple of months ago by a car and a guy was hit by a bus on Coventry road Small Heath 2 Saturdays ago. He was seriously injured , not sure if he recovered as it's not very newsworthy. Take care out there.

Is 10pm preferable to 11? Anyone willing to confirm yet? BlowieBen? , Belgiangoth?
OK 10pm BUT unless anyone else is up for this I'm not bothering to ride 3 miles into town and find only 2 of us turn up and we could have met in Moseley instead

where would you be riding?
id probably come if its a bit earlier.
Last time it started at midnight which was great because most streets were deserted. The earlier it is the more cars and drunks to contend with but whatever suits most people is best for a good turn out. Getting home at 2.30am left me knackered on Sunday so earlier is fine by me.
Riding is mostly round the city centre, Digbeth, Jewellery Quarter, Aston Uni etc whoever is at the front dictates the direction. I like Edgbaston for night rides, big wide streets with massive houses and round Brum Uni too, it might suit people from South side to finish going this way home?

Midnight Mass back in May was pretty good but nothing much has happened since then as people have been away etc.
As Summer is ending (today?) but it's still quite warm is anyone up for another ride this Saturday night? There is interest from a few from last time, could even reach double figures!
Maybe start a bit earlier, 11pm at the Bull or beforehand in a pub...?

I reckon it is. Look at http://www.bing.com/maps/ its the first building on left on Goodge Street/Bishop Street turning left off Sherlock Street. Go to Birds Eye view, it is the white roof with 2 rows of skylights, you can see a five a side net at one end (rotate view with arrows). 3 sides are open with mesh fencing.
