I think I know the thing you're talking about and it absolutely was not a study. It was a lighthearted 'piece' by a GP (who should have known better). Purely anecdotal and didn't isolate variables let alone try to minimise them.
I think the problem with his study was that he did try to minimise variables, but went about it wrong. His first study should have just been bike1 vs bike2 no traffic, then he could have gone on to add traffic and see. In fact what he did was start in traffic (most significant variable) and then try to balance out the weight difference by running heavy tyres on his "light" bike (and "common knowlege" suggests that wheel weight has a bigger effect than frame weight).
Why do I ask? Well, if I ask on a race forum I'll be told to go 100% carbon, if I ask the CTC they'll tell me that anything that costs more than 50p at Aldi's is a rip-off and uinless I can weld it back together over a camp fire I should avoid. So I thought a forum used mostly bu urban commuters and utility cyclists (such as myself) would give me the best advice.
While I am well tempted by the luddite pov, I also have a logical science teacher in me who reckons that carbon forks must have a place and be worth trying, my thinking is that since they are used in audaxes and cyclocross they must be robust enough for a commute. Not sure I'll fork out for them mind ...

@sheathy - B303PH, South B'ham for intersection of NCN5 and local 55 routes.
@Tenderloin - I can take some measurements, though it won't be immediate. It's my wife's old bike and she is 5'8", though she likes to have the saddle so she can touch the floor with her feet, so it should in theory suit shorter & that's the setup with the saddle all the way down so it should also be fine for taller. For regular use it should need new tyres I'd say.

For Sale:
- Selle Trans Am, a bit of wear on the "Trans Am" but practically unridden, £5?
- Revolution Courier Race. Extras: Mudguards, Velo Crosbow (or summat) seat with a hole in it, Ergon Grips with the stubby ends, Comedy ScotOiler, ScotOil refil. £100? Bike has had some reflective tape wrapped on it, to make it look more Tim Burton. About 1500 miles on it, but has been retired in the shed for the last few years (so is not the 2011 model). Suitable for 6'2" +/- a few inches, depending on your preference for large/small frame sizing (too large for 5'9", but could do 5'10" maybe)
- Planet-X carbon seatpost, 27.2. They sold them for about £90 but I only used it for about 20 miles and then swapped it for an alloy. £30?
- Specialized interruptor brake levers, £10?
- Step-through BSOish thing, would suit about 5'8" or more. Has 3-speed S-A with all the shifters and stuff (must be worth about £20), Purple Mudguards (maybe £5?), Dynamo lighting from a bottle dynamo (£15?). So with the frame, BB and wheels I reckon it's worth about £50 in parts if nothing else.
Frankly, on recent viewing its biggest issue is a puncture on the front. I don't like it's 3-speed nature, but a light tweak of components and a SS rear and it would be acceptable. - 700C single-speed wheel, old fashioned steel rim and I think its a mallard hub (guess I should check). I bought it as a fixed gear wheel (120 spacing) but it doesn't have a reverse thread. £30?
- Pair of Vittoria Rubino tyres, blue, 622-25, sold.
- 622-25 Marathon plus, ridden for less than 2k miles, so good as new really. A heavy tank of a tyre, good for a backup bike than needs reliability above all else. £15?
PM me if interested, feel free to make me an offer on stuff, I can always say no.
Happy to post from Brum, but I would need the time to hunt down the right boxes. - Selle Trans Am, a bit of wear on the "Trans Am" but practically unridden, £5?

Uhhh physics A level seems so long ago. What on earth am I working out? Force of two moving objects maybe...
rate of change of momentum is force, 1/2mv2 is kinetic energy. To tear the door off you are probably more interested in the force as that will tell you whether the bolts that hold the door to the car can take it. So, I think you are right.
