So this is my second winter with a trainer, I originally bought a Kinetic Smart 2, wheel on trainer - https://www.kurtkinetic.com/trainers-products/road-machine-smart-2 - it's been fine, no real complaints.

I've gone from fairly casual use, to 3-4 sessions a week, and I'm starting to see noticeable improvements, FTP increase, weight loss, etc... and I think it's time to step up to the next level for next winter, to just a better trainer, and a more immersive experience.

I use an Apple TV for Zwift, and I recently bough a Wahoo Headwind, and a Wahoo Tickr (to control the headwind, and also because bizarrely the Apple Watch I previously used for heart rate doesn't directly connect to the Apple TV)

As I'm already in the Wahoo ecosystem I'd ideally like to upgrade to a Wahoo trainer for compatibility, I'd need a strong reason to look at another manufacturer - I know ANT+ should work fine between them all still.

In addition the Apple TV only allows for 2 direct Bluetooth connections, anything else has to go to the companion app, which is not as reliable, so the less connections needed the better.

So that's my requirements, so I guess my options are:

Kickr Core
Kickr
Kickr Bike

For the relatively small difference in price between Kickr and Kickr Core, if I'm spending all that money I figure I might as well go with Kickr?

But then the real question is the Kickr Bike - is there any way that's even justifiable? for 3 times the price it really would have to be a lot better.

Finally does anyone have the Kickr Climb? is this just a dumb gimic, or does it actually make for a better experience?

If you had to choose Kickr Core + Climb vs Kickr what would you choose?

Finally, given all that, is it worth looking at any other manufacturers, is anything else that much better it would be worth the hassle?

After the advice on here, i've been calibrating before every ride. and it's pretty consistent. Sometimes I'm lazy and calibrate it without warming up, today I did it before, and then after, to compare, and the calibration number was very different - and the ride felt a lot harder (I did also get somewhat drunk the day before, so could have also been me)

I have a Kinetic Road Machine Smart 2 tire on trainer. My typical calibration number, when cold is around 1.60 - after warmup today it was 1.70

What I can't seem to find is what that number really means - I don't want to cheat the stats, ultimately I'm only cheating myself - but the control freak part of me wants to be able to blame the calibration if I have a tougher ride. So if I want to know if a higher number is harder, and if it's a linear scale, does a 5% higher calibration number mean I have to put in 5% more watts?

Well, I did say her starting to use it is the perfect reason for me to get a better more expensive one ;)

My wife couldn't care less about her power output, she's just doing it for the exercise. I do care a little bit.

How anal do you get about calibration?

My wife and I share the same trainer, with different bikes, so obviously they are getting switched around a lot.

I try to make an effort to adjust the contact point as close to what is was before, and keep my tires pumped up, etc - but of course there will be minor differences.

I don't care about a few percent here or there, but obviously I don't want to be 10 or 20% over/under reporting my wattage.

There were people in my cat d race doing 5 w/kg. Why?

I don't get it. I feel bad averaging about 2.8w/kg in cat D races, and finishing top 10-20% - and the person who wins is invariably doing 5. I mean, sure, big fish, small pond and all that, but isn't it a bit boring? they would still do well in the higher categories

Worlds should be announced in the next few days. Toronto is likely to do our annual Fall Ballin tournament a week or two before, so I hope those of you who go, can maybe make it here (and obviously you stay with me).

I think it's probably my last year. It's got too big this year, spread over 3 hotels, and every session full, so you walk 40 minutes to find you can't get in.
