I think this needs to be done, although it's no joke from the wrong side of the Rio Grande (SE). But I'm digging out my passport...
Tube is not too far away, and seems sensible, but We All Know Who We Are, right? And riding stops you from going mad buying. Marylebone Rd isn't my favourite, let alone 10 miles of the Westway, so check out the canal points at Paddington and Perivale. Canal wanders all over the shop, but no lights, and picturesque at points.

Has anyone been yet? Some years it seems dire - just a blaze of colour, hype and marketing blurb, and that is maddening if you've paid full price for tickets. Other years it's not so bad. I wouldn't mind blagging a couple though. Any offers? PMs welcome.
According to Cycling Weekly, the road machines are in full effect at Earl's Court this year. They'd hardly say anything else though...

Coppi: 'I have so much respect for him'
+1
I learnt a lot from what he said, he made sure he mentioned the names of plenty of other riders who he respected, and he didn't shy away from commenting on hoary old (but difficult) stuff like drugs in cycling. Shocking info contrasting the continental attitude to cyclesport with the casual British style back in the day. Well-meaning but very amateur team mechanics. GB team sponsorship consisting of a set of tyres!Nice dry sense of humour as well. Unlike G, I never got some of his old kit and one of his own bikes directly from him, just had a nice De Ver frame for a while. But really, an easy person to respect. Nice family too, they were there.

I will dust off my analogue sony dictaphone thing and see if it still rolls, but I just can't think of where I have any full-size cassettes. If anybody coming along has a digital recorder with a fat memory, that would be a better option - would make the conversion to mp3 or mp4 a lot easier too.
Aside from Coppi Productions taking it all on, any offers?

Having moaned so shamefully about the price of a bargain frame, and totally devalued his mate's friendship (and trashed himself in front of thousands online while doing so), now Tarboy is flipping the F+F.
http://www.londonfgss.com/thread30296.html
What a prince among men. I've been following the thread. If it is true that Tarboy's married, I pity his wife.

Thanks for posting this, Oliver. Now news of this has leaked out onto the internets, I'd be getting there earlier rather than later if I wanted to be sure to get in. They are not answering email requests for tickets. Not a good sign. And Lambeth don't have the best reputation for organisation. They've probably allocated the man a broom cupboard for his audience. I just heard his shop team (De Ver) can't get seats!
-
Dayam! I sure missed that one. :(
I know Hael likes to get down, so I should have been suspicious when he was back over this side of town again. I blame the thread heading - what happened with the date there? Coppi and veLLo were trying to get me down the track, but I was just under-prepped and overloaded with things to do.Oh well, feel free to fling up your playlists, people. I'm the one who can be arsed about them. I'll try to leech a tiny bit of the vibe from the tunes and Coppi's inevitable multimedia production. Props to Pista for dropping Vaughn Mason and the Crew - if that isn't a jam, then nothing is :)
Feeling better now.
-
Wowsa. Damn, but people know their tunes around here! Thanks for the lists. Your grooves shall not be forgotten. ++Snowy - come again, selector! I won't miss my turn on the decks next time.
Props to everybody who made the effort to get down, double props to Corny and the other organisers - well done indeed. @Coppi, your productions are getting sick and slick, man. I expect titles and a logo for the next one... If you're not there with your camera, then a week later, it's almost as if it didn't happen. Oh, and not a one of dem on the forum, but big shout out to the Bar Story regulars who diluted the Sidis on the dance floor and were good company: 'So... do all of you ride bikes, then?'

Nice night. Awaiting coppi's remix with anticipation. He was everywhere with his camera. Props to all forumengers like Hael who rolled in from right over Shepherds Bush and ting. Delicious vinyl.
Anyone interested in posting their set-list?I have a point to make. Bar Story is a nice venue, with a lot of advantages - reasonably spacious, secure parking, 2xSLs, good mix of people, and it's a short hop from my yard. However, Ben is not nice. He seems to have a not-so-subtle contempt for his punters that I was not the only one to notice through the evening. Ok, it's no picnic running a bar, but at the end of the night he preferred to jet-hose us out of the place instead of just asking people to drink up/clear out. I was 'accidentally' hit a few times as I was drifting to the gate. I don't drink, and I wasn't causing trouble. I am vexed though.
Does anyone have any suggestions for an alternative venue we could try? This guy doesn't appreciate the money we are spending there.

54cm MDT import aluminium road/crit frame. Light. Snake-stays. Mega tear-drop down-tube. Wheel-groove seat-tube. Vertical dropouts. Mizuno carbon fork. Shimano 600 alloy headset. Would consider swap/part-exchange for alloy road frame 58/60cm, or complete bike, with cash adjustment. Seatpost collar included (but missing from pic). Could be fixed if you know what you're doing. £70. South or S.E. beers.

Even if you know what you're doing, it can easily go very wrong. Check this ride report from this year's Exmouth Exodus:

Let me tell you another tale from the other end of the Dynamo. Due to various problems and mess-ups, I started late. Even later than Pixie. I was too late for London Fields and a route map, so I just dotted down some notes. No problem - I've done the DD several times before. My Spooner day bike seemed about to break, but I had made up my mind to do it, so I broke every rule in the book, built up a back-up frame that I had forgotten the problems of, no shakedown, and even put on a different saddle.
I had a decent ride out, just a bit lonely. I got the magic, but missed the camaraderie. Amazingly, I did eventually pass people. I think Greenbank and Seldom were being harsh, but reality is the harshest on the clueless. I came across people who had got lost (got lost myself, didn't remember the route as well as I thought), people crawling grimly with ridiculous loads or on unsuitable bikes, people who had cried, people whose friends had packed and were off somewhere looking for train stations (at 3am), others whose friends had abandoned them and gone ahead, and people who had completely tanked. Some seemed to have had no-one to advise them, and apparently couldn't use the internet either. Luckily the weather allowed them to crash out under a hedge for a few hours, PBP-style. I had to sympathise. On my first-ever DD, (pre-internet), I didn't even know enough to bring a spare tube. When my tyre was blown off the rim by a jagged star puncture, Patrick Field came along and gave me a spare tube without saying a word.
Some people must have joined the ride on the way home from the pub - they didn't seem to have slept beforehand, eaten, or charged up their lights. As early as Finchingfield I passed a DD rider kipping in the bus-shelter on the green. Even asleep he looked as flat as a pancake. I kept a guy with a nice bike company for a while, encouraging him, but it was a downhiller with off-road tyres, and eventually he packed.
I didn't even try the feeding station, it would have closed or at least run out of food.
I did see some forum peeps, because by the time I was nearing the beach, some of youse were already on the return leg. I think I saw Oliver, I think Hillbilly (recog from Tarckness) Greenbank, together with someone else on a purple Pearson, and a few others. Some returnees were alone, one or two were taking a break by the side of the road. I saw more daylight, and Greenbank is correct, there was noticeable DD litter on the way.
At the beach I kipped a bit and turned round. My very worst idea of the day... the year, maybe.
I have a thing about this transport issue. I did the official London-Brighton as prep for DD, and it was ludicrous that on a 'green' ride, 50,000-odd bikes and riders all had to be driven back to London afterwards. The 'London-Brighton Motorway Run'. You can't get on the train, and even when you can, you get robbed for the fare. They manage to do it in Europe. Sort it out Boris.
I'm quite confident that my Krypto Evo Series 4 lock is kosher. In fact I've bought them for friends as well from the same place. I think I paid 25, compares well to 40 (plus postage?) on Amazon. The Evolution includes an LED lock-light that makes one of the keys look like a car alarm plipper, and a little alloy thing to help make sure that the lock doesn't rattle in the frame mount (don't use it, removable). I've avoided common niggles so far by never wrenching the key in the lock when it's only halfway in (!), and oiling it occasionally.
I didn't bother registering, as I've heard that the replacement key scheme only really works in the US. The worst things I can say about it is that it weighs a bit of course, and each arm has an o-ring on it that makes using a cable loop with it a pain. A decent lock.
