I attended mass for the first time in a good months last night. I took a break from the event after the stupid move of riding down the Mancunian way a while back. Having seen the mailings and this thread I had hopped that perhaps things had moved forwards, unfortunately it seems not.
Can anybody here explain to me how blocking pavements, trams and buses does anything in the slightest to advance the cause of cycling? How does riding down the road on a mobile phone or swigging booze from a can in your bottle holder promote us a a group deserved of being taken seriously by local planners, politicians or even motorists? I've seen groups of riders harp on about irresponsible motorists and then proceed to commit exactly the same crime themselves - Hypocrisy destroys our credibility!
I lasted 5 minutes of the ride last night. I gave up as we crossed Mosley St, blocking the tram and contrary to the earlier discussions pedestrians too. I stopped a little further down the road and talked to a couple of passes by. None of them could understand what was going on or how anybody on the ride really thought it would help their cause. Most people are not anti bike, they may have their own personal barriers to using them, but even in worst case scenario you can usually sell it to them on freeing up parking spaces.
My stance in life is that people should be free to do what they want, so long as it does not harm others. My fear now is that the mass has reached a point where it is actually doing more harm than good, creating animosity from pedestrians and metal box owners alike. I remain a committed cyclist and will gladly work on events such as the mural painting which I know won us a huge number of friends and supporters. I just can't condone the behaviour I'm seeing with Critical Mass any more.

Take the Merc driver to the cleaners. I hope you've reported it. Clearing off is a driving offense.
Darn straight! Seriously you should get it reported, from memory it's a 3 point offence for driving off. The guy was probably not insured which is why he drove off. As much as GMP piss me off there are times they have a use. They had ANPR running in Levy earlier today and it's easy for them to find them... Use the force Morgan!! ;-)
I'm still recovering with a broken finger having been knocked off my bike in Oldham by a 4yr old kid that ran out in front of me as I tootled through a quiet park. The kid was OK but might think to look next time.

Rusholme is sprint training land, just ride it like it's last orders! Upper brook is fine but less visually stimulating. Finglands are the worst that I have found, most of the Stagecoach drivers are fairly decent. An Ex GF of mine trained to be a driver with them a few years back and always joked that if she failed with them that she could always work for UK North, they were without doubt the worst bus company in the area.
One to watch at the moment is Levy, all the works near the now burnt out Tesco are eating lanes and forcing buses to stop in the middle of the road (Levenshulme drivers are to thick to realise what the cones and no parking signs are for!) so just be carefull if you cut up the inside, they just don't have any option at the moment.

Sounds like a move for the old wall of justice the Hells Angels used to have on the wall in the MA in Stockport. Be careful though, you can get done for conspiracy just for talking about doing such things (you are using Thor and a secure OS I take it??) and also as Dangeruss says the car is likely on false plates.
Not that I would condone such things but there are a number of service for a HPI check that give you full details of the registered owner of a car...

Thought I'd report back on this one as it's always good to give a shop credit when they get things sorted. Charge / Hotwheels have been piddling about on sending out the replacement hub so Evans have done the decent thing and given me a SystemEx fixed/fixed and wheel build for free. I shouted for the price of an OpenPro as otherwise I'd have had to give them back my old wheel so they could recycle the rim. Just picked up the wheel this aft. and whilst it's never going to compete with the bling out there it's a nice wheel for £35 :-)
Props to Rich and Ted at Evans Deansgate for spamming me up with a nice wheel and having the decency to say sorry for the delays. Time to order the new cogs and lock rings...

Critical mass is a strange beast, in some ways I love it but I also find it hugely frustrating. Most of the people that get slowed down or held up are just normal joes trying to get where they are going, slowing them down for a bit with a huge mass of bikes misses the point to my mind, I mean most people don't even know why the hell all those bikes are there. The attitude of some of the riders also worries me, it's seen as a revenge against the motorist which is rather indiscriminate. Yes, the world would be a better place with more bikes and less cars but revenge is never a good motivation. Most of the folks are just their for the social, lots of the student types will doubtless be calling mummy this weekend to tell them they are now eco-bike-protest-swampy-wannabies and that's also cool.
I joined in for a while last night after I picked up my bike. I shot off for a blast on my own when the usual chaos ensued trying to get onto the dual carriage way. I think city centre is a better place to do it. I've spoken to a few bemused bystanders and explained what we were doing before now, something you just can't do on a quick road.
It's a painfully slow ride and being on a freewheel I couldn't even use it as a bit of leg training. Props to those that give up their time to not be the organiser(s) but I think the festival work does more to achieve the true aims of mass. I shouldn't complain tho, I met the GF on a mass ride last year so it does have a soft spot in my heart... ;-)
The true game of CM really is guessing which of her bikes Nes will be riding!!

I've probably spoken to you this week at some point, I seem to have covered most of the staff now sorting this jeffin hub out. Richard seems to have it in hand now so fingers crossed I'll back on a fixed cog for next weekend. I was in this evening picking it up so I could at least ride on the freewheel.

Nice on Morgan. I'm in freewheel mode at the moment after stripping my hub last weekend :-( but Charge have promised they'll have the new hub with Evans ASAP (they sent the wrong one this week) and I'm taking the hit on a new OpenPro as Evans are doing the build foc. Just trying to decide on a new cog and lockring to go with it.. Andel cog and lockring on a Charge(formula??) hub?? I dunno.. to many shinny bits to chose from!

alright chris. was that the fish slap checkpoint? i kept accidentally punching my partner with the hand holding hte fish!
Yup, that's the one. I think Chicken won the best punch from his team mate award but that was half the fun in having only small fish. I had been planning on using real ones but cost and vegan militants left me with the sewing kit and some dish sponges.
It was my humble attempt to lower the tone and stop some of the testosterone loaded hipsters from taking themselves so seriously.

Given that I want a couple of bits from them I might just go DA from HubJob and get the DA trackie tool and a cracker at the same time. I'm sure it would also turn me into an instant fixie god having something with NJS stamped on it, calf tat here I come ;-)
This https://www.tokyofixedgear.com/products.asp?l1=PART&l2=LOCR Surly looks like the Andel (Surly = Re-branded Andel for the cogs right??) and I can see the extra depth argument so I might be tempted but that would lean me more towards the Predros or maybe the Hozan tool, it looks suitably solid.
Do condor not do mail order? The price is right!

Good new - Those nice folk at Hotwheels have advised Evans that they will send out a new wheel under waranty. Looks like I'll be good to go in a couple of days :-) They've not mentioned the lockring but Evans advise they'll spam me up with something if one is not supplied, they suspect it will be the whole wheel including cog and ring.
Having had a good search through the forums (yup I might have necro posted but I DO search!!) I'll probably stump up for a decent lock ring and chain / lockring tool this week. The new Dura-Ace trackie tool on hubjub looks like a reasonable bit of kit althogh the Pedro's Trixie Tool ( http://www.velosolo.co.uk/shoptool.html** ) **looks interesting as I could use the box spanner and chain whips aint that expensive. Lock ring wise I was looking at a Dura-Ace unless anybody can put forward a good case for spending more on something better.

So what is the liability on this event? Both for the individuals and towards I bike MCR as an organisation*
*what is the legal status of I Bike MCR?
