I'm shocked by the amount of thefts in this thread! Here is mine to add to the mix.
Last night (June 16, 2009) my friends bike was stolen in London, take from outside the Mary Ward Centre in Queens Square near Holborn sometime between 6:00pm and 9:00pm. It was a yellow single-speed, originally a 531 Falcon frame but repainted yellow with a white head-tube, Shimano cranks and SLR brakes, Campag Omega rims on low-flange Campag Record hubs(different from the pic but everything else is as it was). She has grown very attached to it and was quite upset when I was speaking to her. I don't think the lock she had was upto much to be honest, just a basic D-Lock and a Kryptonite cable lock for the wheels.
I know it's a massive longshot and will check the obvious spots when I can but if anyone sees it, I'd appreciate it if they'd give me a shout or If you see it and can pick it up cheap I'll sort you out. Cheers.

My friend has had a loan of it for 4 years so maybe it's not mine anymore, but I'm digressing. Iced coffee from a servo runs to $3 now! TimTams were $2.29 from Wollies or Safeway or whatever they like to call themselves. You can get TimTams here now, I did a direct comparison last week with p-p-p-p-penguins and a TimTam Slam is better with a penguin :) The only decent Cadburys chocolate was from the Lolly shops imported direct from the UK which cost an arm and a leg but its worth the difference. You'd get a good 250gm bar of Aussie Cadburys Dairymilk for $3. Cappucino on DeGraves in Melbourne - $4. This info is 3 months old now though.
Hippy whats the deal with Mildura? When I was there, I wanted to stay for just one night but everyplace would only take me if I stayed a week. Am I just that awesome???

Thread dredging!
I was also surpised at the lack of research and forethought that had gone into the route planning - why would you go through the centre of large, busy cities when you're trying for a speed record? Why hadn't he anticipated wind directions?
But it's easy to be an armchair critic - it's a hefty acheivment to make.
In my idle daydreaming about beating his record (cos i got mad skillz), I found the Guinness rules for the record here: http://www.pedallingaround.com/route/?page_id=3. Pretty handy to know if anyone wants a stab at this, or fancies doing it fixed :-)
Fixed touring is hard. I managed 18,000km on a normal tourer, decided I needed a stiffer challenge and went and did a tour fixed. Even on a tiny gear it was nails! Hills are not so much a problem as wind, it really gets you. Fixed there is no escape. It wears you down. You have to keep the cadence at a reasonable speed and its exhausting. The abuse I screamed at the wind made Gordon Ramsay sound like a girl guide! 6,000km fixed was more than enough for me, good on anyone who wants to give it a go. That said I'll probably warm to the idea in the not too distant future though.
As for anticipating the wind, I followed the prevailing winds according to research and still had about 75% headwind instead of the other way around - just bad luck. I learned the hard way that prevailing doesn't mean always :)

In that case I'll take one if it's going.
