Nice bike set up here, Vinyl. Is it set up as a trick bike? I've done the same front brake cable routing on all of my previous bikes so that I can bar spin them. Is this what yours is set up for? I also know that a lot of the top loading brake calipers (standard ones that mount via one bolt in the fork crown) foul the frame when the bars spin, is this one of the reasons you've opted for the disk break?

I'm sorry to say that my Pug is now dead - RIP. It lasted well, and to exigetastic, I ran my Pug with ALL orginial parts for some time. I literally took off the gears. I managed to line the chain up on the largest cog on the front and the one closest to the right gearing on the back (good net programme called 'Rabbit' for calculating gear ratios if you need it) and it was near enough straight.

Thanks Destroyer, maybe quicker than my intended "pragmatic approach" of just disabling the front mech and trying each of the cogs on the rear cassette on each leg of my commute over a few days.

Cant help you on the Pug front, but i run a front mechanical disc - i think you would have problems fitting those forks unless you converted to an aheadset, which might end up costing a wee bit. Anyway heres a pic of my brake set up, similar to the one before in the thread - didnt realise anyone else had done this, though i know Flickwig has done since with a disc too.

Wow, NICE!!! If I'm honest, I'd be more worried about that getting scratched than my Trek !!

For the forks I sort of figured I'd need, those forks + a threadless 1" headset + a shim + a stem + new bars.... so yep I guess it wouldn't be super cheap, and the only slavagable parts if I were ever to ditch the pug would be the bars and stem :(

I do wonder what impact thed' have on the geometery too, but hey may be I'm running before I can walk :)

Thanks Tom, loving your Pug. The frame looks almost identical to the one I had back in the day. Yours is in much better nick than mine was though! I remember once using the back of a lorry as makeshift brakes in the wet, had straight bladed forks for the rest of the day, but soon foxed with a vice and a big hamnmer!

Glad to hear you can get by with the original chainset, will make it a fair bit cheaper and more straight forward as a newbie.

One last Q, In terms of your rear cassette what did you need to buy to sort that ? Is it SS not Fixed ? Might be worth considering for "phase 1"

First post so be gentle ;)

Been reading thorugh lots of threads on and I'm itching to get a bike that looks even half as nice as some of those I've seen here...

My current "commuter" bike is a Carbon Trek, and it's getting ditched, so I thought about getting an Admag beater.

A couple of ebay sales cast my mind went back to my days at school and my trusty old pug. (The number of times that thing got crashed and still kept running was unbelievable :) ) Well one thing leads to another and here I am.

TBH all your efforts are amazing, and it looks like I'll end up spending some £££ on my initally cheap bike!

I commute pretty much everyday 7 mile each way, but as a bonus it's nice and flat, perfect for a fixie!

I'm not sure which way to go, in terms of originality vs. pimped. But to get me started, is there anything I'm missing in this list? :

1- Reasonable nick Pug. I've seen a Carbolite one, which I think should have really been called Carboheavy :) or wait for a 531?
2- Wheelset, SJSC Track hub based ? Which rims ?

In terms of the chainset I was thinking of leaving the original on in the short-term, and replacing it later.

One crazy thought I did have was to make use of some old hope disc brakes I've got, but I'm not sure how the headset would accept one of these:
