I agree totally, I think there should be a "what to do if your bike is stolen" similar to the accident thread...
Something along the lines of
(a) report it to the police (with all the relevant contact details)
(b) put a post in the stolen bikes thread
(c) check brick lane etc
(d) check the locks thread before getting a new bike
(e) see advice on securing seat posts etc
(f) follow up police details
etc etc -

Sorry to derail a little but have you had this confirmed?
you can't take a bike on the Stansted Express unless it's packed for Air Travel.
I am flying from Stansted on Friday and didn't think getting a bike to the airport would be a problem, having seen your message I checked the Stansted Express website and is says
Please note large non-folding bikes are not permitted.
Argh, I can pack my bike before I get on the train but I can't think of any other way of getting to airport with ease if I can't take it full stop.
Sorry this doesn't help you but if you could let me know where you heard that they would take packed bikes that would be great....
Thanks.

I saw a tandem being ridden across clapham common yesterday, it stuck in my head because I can't recall seeing a tandem for ages... wasn't close enough see bike or riders in detail but I guess it's possible that it was yours and it's still in South London area.
Sorry that that's not more helpful.
Hello, i don't have a picture, but some arse just stole my green Twin-Twenty tandem bike, from the peckham area. : ( it's a bit like a raleigh shopper but a tandem version, dark vibrant, emerald green, 'twin' and 'twenty' are written on the seatposts. I will try and find a photo as soon as i can, but I only just got it so I haven't taken any.
please if anyone knows anything i'll be so happy.

Not sure if this counts as a micro-brewery but I'm really enjoying Wandle beer from Sambrooks in Battersea - http://www.sambrooksbrewery.co.uk/index.html

A few months back I had an accident (massive face plant) in front of a bus (no fault of the bus at all I might add) and the bus driver and passengers helped me loads, calling ambulance and police for me, anyway I tried to get hold of the footage of me landing on my face, I thought it would be possible to get it through the data protection act but the bus company said that due to regulations surrounding cctv I couldn't get the footage, just telling me my front wheel fell off and I went over the handlebars landing squarely on my face. I did do a little research and there was some things about how some cctv isn't covered by the data protection act but never really followed it up. This doesn't really answer your question but is my experience of trying to get cctv footage.
What the Bus company told you seems highly dubious: Unless you agree otherwise you have a right to a copy of any footage of you.
See, for example:
http://www.ico.gov.uk/upload/documents/cctv_code_of_practice_html/9_responsibilities.html
Individuals whose images are recorded have a right to view the images of themselves and, unless they agree otherwise, to be provided with a copy of the images. This must be provided within 40 calendar days of receiving a request. You may charge a fee of up to £10 (this is the current statutory maximum set by Parliament).

Savvy, I'm cycling from Bosnia, up the Croatian coast and up to Germany in six weeks. I'll be wild camping the whole way in a hammock. If you find any interesting links, bung them up here? I'll do the same? When are you going?
Sounds good!
Here are two links which have been useful/inspirational so far:
http://www.balkaninsight.com/en/main/life_and_style/27259/
and the blog linked further up this thread is really good as well.
I'm going the first two weeks of August, cycling from Pula in north Croatia to Bar in Montenegro, then getting the train to belgrade to spend a night or two and then fly home from there. Can't wait.

-bump-
I'm off to cycle down the Croatian coast for a couple of weeks this summer, has anyone got any experience of wild camping in this area? or using campsites? want to keep costs down as low as possible. Internet tells me that wild camping is either (a) totally illegal and you will get in trouble, or (b) totally fine (normal sensible approach obviously)...
Thanks all.

I've got a Pentax W60, image quality is good for a cheap(ish) compact and its survived being battered, submerged in salt/fresh water for hours, sand, dirt, etc. So far, I'm very impressed with it.
I have this camera too and it does take a beating, had it out in surf etc, but I do find that it takes blimmin' ages to "auto"focus (2-3 seconds) which makes taking 'action' shots (on the move/of moving objects) pretty tricky.
Not sure how this compares to other cameras though as I've not really used anything else...

Having bought a GRP Superdeals U-Lock from the shop in Peckham (on the recommendation of this thread) about six or seven months ago I have been very pleased with the security and value it represented.
However two nights ago I went to unlock my bike and the whole mechanism was jammed up and it took (literally) twenty minutes of gentle attention to finally get the key to turn properly and release my bike. Now I had found the mechanism a little (for want of a better word) "sticky" a couple of times previously but nothing that took this long and that didn't get sorted with a bit of oil once I got home. Yesterday however while testing/oiling the lock it jammed again and now it really doesn't want to open. Whether it will again after prolonged attention, I don't know, but the fact that this has happened twice in two days and after oil makes me think the lock has to go, I'm not going to risk getting my bike stuck somewhere for the sake of not buying a new lock.
To be honest the lock isn't/wasn't treated especially gently, it gets left outdoors overnight once a week or so and it bounces around on my handlebars everytime I cycle somewhere without a bag (very often), so perhaps this is the lesson, the GRP lock needs to be treated well.
I just thought I'd put this out there and see if anyone else had had similar issues. I would still recommend this lock (treat her gentle) but I thought that sharing this info would be the right thing to do :-)

Can anyone who has a fancy imaging software please see if you can confirm for me the license number and (if possible) the five digit taxi number from this picture:

or (even worse picture)

It might not be possible but I want to make a complaint about some idiotic driving and this is the best I could get while in motion on my phone :-(
Thanks.

Thanks :-)
