Heading along the A4 cycle path, east, this morning. Minding my own business when squirrel darts straight across my path without even indicating. Could have been curtains for me. The government should fund an ad campaign alerting **squirrel **to this kind of dangerous behaviour - it's only a matter of time before a cyclist is seriously injured in this way.
@Squirrel, was this you? ;)

While I am one myself, I'm starting to hate car drivers more and more. I just can't understand how people can be so unconscionably stupid...
Don't hate yourself for a moment longer, follow my lead and sell your car! I sold my vehicle at the weekend and now have £600 to spend on my bike!! Wooo yeah!!!

This whole story has really touched me. I can't imagine what it is like to lose a loved one in these circumstances. Velcro I wish you all the luck in the world with trying to find out what happened. I'm updating my facebook today.
Here is the BBC news page (posted today) relating to the investigation:

I think i meant not being held back/handicapped by your equipment..
yeah i agree with what you're saying, and to be honest when I'm my bike 99% of the time I am spiting my lungs out just trying to get to my destination just that little bit faster than last time. Any annoying issues with the bike such as slightly flat tires, un-true wheels or noisy chain drives me nuts. Hell sometimes I ride along the fat white line on edge of the bus lanes because i think there is less rolling resistance!

@iro_dan, I would agree with most of what you said especially the last bit about riding the bike and not worrying about if you are doing things properly.
But that kind of contradicts what you say about only doing tricks on proper BMX or street/jump bikes.
IMO people can do whatever they like on what ever bike they choose.
And in a way doing skillful things on an inappropriate bike is kind of a bit special. A while ago I was looking to do a car endurance rally to china and other competitors were entering all sorts of inappropriate fun vehicles (2CVs, London Cabs, model t fords etc etc). If you just want to drive to china you'll drive a Toyota Landcruiser, but thats not really the point is it.
I don't know, maybe I'm speaking out my arse... wouldn't be the first time.

i got a front brake.
but im using my foot to slow the back one so im shredding up my shoes.
it's 48/15.
whats best to get it changed to?
and do you change the chainring or the bottom bracket?I had trouble stopping my 48/15 fuji with just my legs at first especially when I had built up a bit of momentum... but I had a front brake fitted when I bought the bike so no worries there. Eventually I built up enough strength to stop without the brake in most situations (and skid in the wet). I've now changed to 48/17 and found it much easier to stop. I can also skid like a devil but after watching my back wheel gradually wear down I've decided to mostly cut that out... Why you feel like using your foot to brake when you've got a front brake I just can't imagine!

Actually that is what I would consider a massive change. Those two teeth on the cog are worth 10".
Still probably too high.Yeah it certainly feels like a massive change when out on the bike, 48/15 was getting a bit tedious on long hills.
My ratio experiment is not over yet but I'll see how this new gear feels after a week.
BTW when removing the old sproket the reverse rotafix trick worked a treat. This was after snapping a brand new halfords chainwip.. anoyingly my parktools was out on loan.

I remember when the city police first started using bike cops, they tended to be really bike-fit big blokes on decent-ish MTBs. I once saw them cycle after and pull over a Porsche 911 on Aldersgate street.
These days its all fat blokes and birds with their saddles far too low, weighed down by a ton of kit. I've often wondered what I would do if they ever gave chase... to be honest I can't imagine doing anything else but bolting! -
On Sat I swapped out 48/15 with 48/17 for my fuji. Not a massive change but I have spent the last two days riding around with a big grin on my face accelerating away from lights without feeling like my legs are going to explode. I also feel much more in control of the bike especially when it comes to (skid) stopping.
Having said that, riding 48/15 for 5 months has done wonders for my leg strength!

I spent a Queen's Day in Amsterdam once - a really, really happy-go-lucky event that includes the whole city. Can't believe someone did that.
My brother lives in Holland and we spent last Queens day in Amsterdam. It was a fantastic couple of days, really good fun getting pissed up with the Dutch who are in general some of the nicest people you'll ever hope to meet.

I wish it had been merely an 'Oh shit!' moment for the four people who have so far been confirmed killed and the others who were seriously injured. Early suggestions are that this was a murderous attack using a car as a weapon. Absolutely awful. The cyclist could easily have been the fifth.
Totally agree. The full details of the incident were not known when I first posted, I certainly didn't want to make light of people getting killed.

Watch the cyclist at the bottom of the picture as the car hits the railings.
If that isn't an Oh Shit moment I don't know what is!

Yoo, I am down for whatever, just need a bike, mine got pilfered, so if anyone has one cheep let me know and I will be there, cheers, also anyone ride around in stokenewington angle area?
Hey Lemondragonfly, I live just off Stokenewington High Street and commute through Highbury and Islington everyday and usually spend all my weekends on the bike. I'll probably be heading to Trafalgar Sq. on Wed 13th.
Also I have a unipack bike (in bits) you are welcome to have. As everyone will tell you they are rubbish.. but it will at least get you on the road :)
I managed by very first sit down track stand today on the way to work... I was well chuffed!
... And yesterday I was feeling fruity and pulled a long-skid-into-track-stand at a set of lights. I then went one handed to smooth my hair back. At that moment I felt as cool as Roger Moore... but I'm sure to everyone else I looked like the biggest wanker in Christendom! But hey, fuck it!!
