It wasn't far from where I lived so I used to go there regularly over the past 15 years. Personally I think the Tenderloin has cleaned up a great deal and is hardly recognisable to its previous incarnation as the seamy underbelly. I've stayed there quite a few times and it used to be scary as fuck. Now it's fucking dodgy.

Amoeba is a must visit and the best pizza in the world can be found nearby at Escape from New York Pizza. The Stinking Rose is worth a visit if you like garlic as their motto is they "season garlic with food". Near the Stinking Rose is the SF brewing company with makes a killer IPA and Stout and used to have amazing happy hours.

Lucky 13 is a fun punk rawk bar in Mission district and you can often meet musicians, artists and assorted celebrities. They used to do a cheap Pabst Blue Ribbon special.

If you're into tattoos some of the best artists in the world still work there but definitely book far in advance.

It's a hard city to not have a good time in.

I'm a foreigner so I apologise if this is common knowledge but I can't find the numbers to use to call the police when it's a non-emergency. I've been run down by a black cab once and have been intimidated and threatened on at least one occasion where I would have wanted to call the police.

If I'm not injured and it's not a 999 situation, where do I find the numbers to call? I tried looking at the Met website but couldn't find them and the two stations I went to to report an incident were both closed after 6pm.

I'm interested to hear the answer to this. It seems the driver was in the wrong even thought the cyclist was doing something that could lead to this sort of bust up. What is the legal answer to this?

Clefty, thanks for the review. I just ordered one to add my arsenal of locks because I love my bikes and it would break my heart to have one stolen.

I also get a perverse pleasure in inflicting pain upon a bike thief. Even if only aural.

His Specialized was stolen from the National Hospital for Neurology not far from Russell Square tube stop and the British Museum around 10am.

It appears his locks were probably quite inadequate. He doesn't recall what they were but he bought them at Decathlon.

It might well have been, and I'll ask him. He wasn't particularly chatty today as he's gutted to lose his bike. I do believe he had something like an Abus one. I can't really remember but I don't think it was a completely naff one.

Although given that his bike was stolen it clearly wasn't sufficient.

My mate at work just had his bike stolen. He stopped into the hospital to make an appointment as he has early onset PD and was in there for 10 minutes. Came out and the bike was gone. He said he used two cable locks on it. I don't know which hospital but I'll find out tomorrow.

His bike is a Silver Specialized Tarmac Elite and it's 61cm. If anyone sees someone with a too large bike matching this description please let me know. I'll be watching Gumtree and Craig's list and will go through Brick Lane this weekend but that seems a long time for a tealeaf to be sitting on a bike.
