I've been adjusting the set up on my OTP Lager and tried flipping the stem to lower the bars a bit. To complete this I had to remove the bars and put them back in the right way up.
All fine so far.
On the way into work this morning I hoped up a low kerb and the impact of landing made the bars move a bit. When i got into work i gave the bolts a tighten with a small allen key and POP! with what I thought was very little load the bolt stripped the thread out of the stem.
So my question is: What did I do wrong and what can I do to fix it. I think the solution will probably be "buy a new stem and get someone who knows what they're doing to fit it", but that way I won't learn anything.
-
Yeah, I know, it's not the same, just thinking of ways it could be more inclusive.
I'm thinking even with small groups if there are more than just a couple of small groups it'll get noticed and it wouldn't take much for the police and stewards to get on their radios and shut it down.
Good luck to those who go tho, got to be worth a try no matter what happens.

- Last_caress - are 50 odd cyclists going to get away with riding the course?
As a newbie seems only fair that I fall on my sword too.
Perhaps there is another way of doing something similar that would work with a big group, like rolling round the course as soon as the roads reopen while the crowds are still milling around, or a night ride round the course the night before.

Right my penny's worth...
Londonpaper - Shit little rag, less newspaper than litter-in-waiting, good enough reason to cycle in it's self just to avoid those tree murdering bastards getting in your way at tube stations while thrusting their ignorance pamphlets at you. **BUT **they are doing a focus on cycling which is positive and good for all of us, so fair play.
Kyle - I'd possibly think he's a cock if I met him, he'd probably think I was a cock, either of us might be right. **BUT **he rides a bike and has big-upped the forum so he is de-facto OK.
In fact I am Kyle, and so's my wife.

That's a good way to get going. I've been considering when to give fixed a go but there's always a "good" reason no to do it today... Like "I've got to get used to the new bike's handling first" or "Can't be a weekday cos I don't want the first experience to involve flailing around in traffic half asleep on my morning commute" or Can't do this weekend as I've got all this stuff to do".
If anyone wants to pop round and flip my wheel while I'm not looking...

agreed... low gag reflex. OH man, how horrible for the guy that owns it... I'm sure its a very nice ride! Enjoy!
Oops, I bought an SE just like that a week ago as my first ss. Switched the pedals and moved the levers to the end of the horns, and the top tube protector didn't even make it out the shop but yeah it's still a bit lairy. Love riding it tho so I don't care.
-
Had a go on the Brocky park track a while ago on my MTB, nearly came a cropper on the double jump thing where your meant to clear both humps in one, came up a bit short, a few inches shorter and it could have been nasty.
A friend put me onto this site http://www.radbmx.co.uk/ as I've got myself a BMX to fix up, doubt there will be any freebies but the forum has heaps of stuff for sale...
-
I try not to race anything and everything at any time but I just can't resist. As I currently ride an MTB with skinny tyres I kill at that commuter game. Going shopping for my first ever fixie tomorrow so things will change, you'll all be getting plenty of points passing the clueless wobbling newbie.

Just to say thank you to everyone for a memorable ride, pace was fine for me but then I was the interloper on the MTB (carrying a track pump for reasons too dull to explain). I'll definitely be back for more, just got to put my money where my mouth is and get me that bike I've been looking for.
For what it's worth, best bits for me were:
-Charging through an unlit park up by Barnes following a stream of flashing red lights trying to pick out obstacles with the bream from my front led.
-Some pedestrian on one bridge shouting "what are you doing?" and having 30-40 people shout back in near perfect unison "riding our bikes".
-Waiting in Parliament Sq for Big Ben to strike midnight, then leaving on-mass, bikes flooding onto Westminster Bridge approach from every direction, it looked like an invasion.
-Having missed the Millenium Bridge (never spotted the left turn) pulling up to the lights on Lower Thames St with the other half of the ride coming the opposite direction.
-Having a beer and a chat outside city hall at 1 o'clock in the moring (I'm terrible with names but the guy with the Pearson Frame I owe you a beer mate). -
Bumped off the list, I'll have a second go at putting myself on.

This Might be a stupid question but… Is this ride restricted to single speeds and fixies only (yeah I know clue’s in the forum name).

I’m looking to buy a single speed and found this site while researching but I don’t have one yet and this ride looks fun. I guess there is prob a strong community spirit element to this ride and I wouldn’t want to step on anyones toes.

So, can I come too?
Yes I was a doubter but I saw the light and turned up anyway. Very glad I did, it was a gas, great ride, great pace and great company.
Must put my hands up to my part in the "follow the blue lines" navigation fail but watching it on telly later on I noticed the runners mostly use the wrong side of the road so by riding on the left towards the canary wharf we were always going to be sent the wrong way round the island.
Was amazed by how most of the police and stewards were all smiles waves and good-mornings, with a couple of notable exceptions, particularly the city of london police.
I've got a couple of pics of the group stopped up during a route discussion, I'll post them as soon as I can get the camera, it's lead, a computer and my head all in the same place at the same time.
