Gazelle! Pronounced "Gah-zell-uh", according my Dutch friend Almar.
I know a little about them from a conversation with him over beer. He told me about their ubiquity in Holland when he was a boy in the 70's and 80's. I also Googled them and read as much as I could find, mainly from the sites already posted by others on this thread.
Having owned one, I can say it is a fantastic ride, agile and quick, but I'm a weekend warrior and still getting to grips with her around Richmond Park, my standard Sunday blast.
This one (see attached jpg) was put together by RetroDiCorsa for me, a gentleman and an artist when it comes to fine steel.
Hi 1972,
I remember that frame very well. RetrodiCorsa acquired it through me. Never say it built actually. It sure looks nice. Modern era equipment on an old world quality frame. My estimate is that is from 1995. When RetrodiCorsa got it it was still NOS.

@ Zieleman: you got me.... ;-)
I wonder who did the top ends of the S/S.
The red frame shows typical Gerald O'Donovan / Jan Legrand / Peter Serier trade marks. The blue one doesn't.I took a second close look. I do not completely rule out a previous serial has been milled away. I can see a slightly uneven surface and when going with your fingertips over the surface you can also feel it is not even. Still it doesn't explain the more decorations on the BB lug. I would think that the only plausible Gazelle connection could be that Presto had it made with Gazelle according to his specs.
-
-
I know why you're saying that: Because the blue one shows stunning resemblance with a Gazelle A-frame. Some would say it is a modified and refinished A-frame. I do not recall the serial exactly, but it something with 71. Maybe only 71. It has nothing to do with Gazelle serial system anyway. Will check immediately.
After a quick comparison I conclude the brake bridge does differ and the bottom bracket lug shows more decoration than with the A-frame. Chrome was of course not typical for the A, as is the fork. The later 2 can be added/changed, but the bb shell??
-
I am sorry, I can't help with a trackbike of any of the mentioned marques.
I do have another Presto, but it is a roadframe >> the blue one This one is my size and I plan to build it up with black ano early Dura Ace. Another option under consideration is a mix of Nuovo Gran Sport with Universal Mod 61 brakes.
Btw I notice my initial post is gone when I edited to add * SOLD *. The frame is sold.
-
Are you sure it's made by Jan Legrand and not by Peter Serier ?
Around that time, Jan was already working for Raleigh.
I am not sure. It is indeed from around when Legrand started to cooperate with TI Raleigh.
Location Q: Right at your door within a couple of days, as shipping is included in the price. I am in Holland.

Offering ca. 1980 Presto frameset. * SOLD *
Frame fully made with Reynolds 531 butted tubing. The Amsterdam Presto marque had their frames made with Jan Legrand at the time. Frame shows great build quality. There is nice detailing like 3 Amsterdam Andreas-crosses on top the seat stays, aero bridges between the stays and a metal headbadge based on the A'dam symbol. Not shown in the pics: An open Roto Italy bb shell.
Condition: With this frame you will not buy a concours winning example, but it is really great for what it is made for: Riding. Driveside toptube shows 4 touch up spots. See pics. I can do that much tidier, but I leave it to you what to do.
Comes with: C-Record headset and C-Record bottom bracket. Both are in great working condition, but I recommend an overhaull. Loose balls in Motorex grease.
Dimension:
ST 54ct
TT 54cc
Seattube inner: 27.2
Seattuber outer: 28.6Looking for 170GBP shipped

Currently working in this baby that I picked up in the Netherlands a couple of weeks ago.
Picture was taken before I started stripping it. Looking forward to take it for a spin though, I'm fond of Gazelle bikes, don't ask me why though.
You got it from Speurders I see. Looks like the team DAF/Cote d' Or paint to me. I am working on the same now. Mine is an 'AB'. What is yours?
-
Yes, that size matches Ron Groen.
Could be 1983, because he was also in Gazelle's amateur team. Then it was resprayed later, when he joined the Skala team.
Gazelle frame numbers are hard to match with a calander year. There's no direct link between frame number and year.
They just numbered the BB-shells before the frames were produced. The numbering was simply ascending from 0, 1, 2, ... 328xxxx, ect...
They had some books to write the serial numbers they used on which date, when putting the numbers into the bb-shells.So you where there at the time! Great information, thank you.

-
Nice bike. Former (Skil-) Skala Gazelle team.
Looks a bit too small for Ralf Elsfhof. Perhaps Ron Groen's bike ?
What size is it?
I may have done the tech. drawing of that frameset. Probably 1985.
You've got to swap the stem!Yes, his name was on the tt! I will check the size. Probably 57/58ct. The serial unveiled it is probably from 1983.
-
-
Thanks for the kind words. Yes, it is a neat stem. Think I keep one for myself, but I only have to find a bike to go with it.
On the red al cap thing: With all respect, but I have my doubts with a 'special caution' on possibility of stripping. How can anyone strip this piece that is only meant as cover? Dmczone, maybe you were very unlucky with a part of a monday morning batch or maybe you simply used extemely disproportional force. Anyway, I feel very sorry for you. I did unscrew one, to see whether there was something interesting going on underneath. Went smooth, easy and with zero mark.
Underneath nothing spectacular going on btw. Only a solid steel bolt leading to a wedge clamp.

Fred,
Good question!
The frame is sold already and the buyer did not take the Cinelli ...so yes, it is available seperately now. The above specced 20 GBP is a trow in with the frame price, as you will understand. For 30 GBP you get stem, hardware, shipped to your place, what I think is still a great deal. Please let me know what size you need: 120 or 125mm

Hello people,
We all know this topic evolved into a quite lively discussion
Let´s see whether we, with some new elan.... can breath new live in this topic
I reasoned still 1, 2 or more people could be interested in this seat, so I got you some 360 pics ===>
Someone on here said before it is an fugly seat. I do not find it an fugly seat. Like in the pic in combination with the Ti Syncros my impression is they form a distinctive, sophisticated ensamble. For the right build of course, but that is always an important factor. If I had found it fugly I wouldn´t have offered it. It is that simple.
Okay, so I said before I am ready for splitting the lot and that I am shipping 1 or several with pleasure. It is:
1 for 20
3 for 50
shipped.
The 3 for 50 is more favourable thanks to shipping scale benifits. If I pack really smart, without doing concessions to safety of freight, I could even do 4 for 60.
Thank you
-
you are only on here to sell stuff
My track record is one of selling, that's right. Sold the lot of tyres, sold the GAZELLE Champion Mondial. Up for offering will be Cinelli ''panto'' roadstems, GAZELLE 'baan' with NR pista and I can think of more. I reasoned some of you might like it, but people do not need to buy something of course.
So far sold a job lot of tires and now a job lot of tyres because it creates, especially with tires, substantial shipping benefits, as the stuff has to come from overseas. I am not really in the wholesaling thing. Just a private person with way to much bikes, in attempt to be able to fund at least a small part of his hobby. Okay, I think more are familiar with this.
Okay, splitting now!
20 GBP per seat shipped to any destination in EU

Teenslain,
I am a newbie overhere, but a regular on Retrobike. This Feedback could be helpfull in making people confident in dealing with me.
Hi Buzz,
Congrats with your frame. Nice one! Spotted it. Not a bad deal. Not bad at all.
I do have an AA in that same paintscheme, including the block letters on the TT.
