I was under the impression they were supposed to match your inside leg length?
Apparently for short arse legs like mine 165mm are the ticket. However Pifko who is has far longer legs than me also runs 165s.
And I'm shorter than you running 172.5 on both geared and fixed bikes.
If clearance is tight you might want shorter cranks, as you'll avoid hitting your wheel against your foot when cornering, which can be annoying, and also pedal strike on the floor, which can kick you off line and make you crash if its bad enough.

There are loads of things to take into account to get the perfectly fitting bike, including seat tube/top tube length, geometry, crank length, saddle position (forward/back) and height, stem length, handlebar width, cleat position on the cycling shoe ... the list goes on. It's probably not worth worrying too much about it unless you're a pro or you feel uncomfortable. I'd go with what feels right for you. If its uncomfortable having a bent back, then adjust the bike so you're in a more upright position, or whatever.

Sorry to sound dull, but in a world where we as cyclists spend alot of time whining about car drivers should we not be trying to keep clear of any areas which could result in bad press for cyclists?
Doesn't sound dull to me, if you're always in the right, then it's not your fault if you get hit. If you're in the wrong and so is the other guy it'll make it a lot harder to prove it was their fault.
Actually that does sound dull, but I've been hit before, its not something I'd care to repeat.

I used to ride home all the time, drunk, no lights, no helmet, never had an accident. I put that entirely down to luck. I very rarely drink and ride nowadays, getting hit by a car when its not your fault sucks, but at least you can claim some money from their insurance. If you're drunk you'll have a pretty hard time getting anything ... unless you're really good at acting sober ;)
The worst kind of hangover would be waking up in the morning to find my a twisted pile of steel where my bike lives :'(

Hey sweens, that's my route home on Monday and Thursday evenings! It's pretty nice when there is no traffic and the lights are green, though I do find the hill a bit of a struggle if I'm tired. But thats the challenge right?
I still really like heading out across the chain ferry to Swanage, Corfe Castle, and back. Have yet to try that fixed though, the climb up out of Swanage could be interesting, as well as that fucker of a hill down into Studland :).
I quite enjoy the Avon Causeway, a nice long flat road, can just cruise along at a decent pace. The A35 through the New Forest is pretty nice too, lots of flat sections followed by some good climbs.
Actually, I like pretty much everywhere around here. Don't think I've found a road/route I wouldn't ride again.

My top speed is probably around 47mph (geared), I tend to try not to go too much faster than that if I'm on a big hill or I might just shit myself.
Don't have a computer on my fixed, but I use a VDO C1 (I think).
