I have a similar problem except it's coming from the left hand crank (I'm guessing, it only happens when pedalling with the left crank anyway) and is more of a creaking cracking sound. There was a slight bit of play between the crank and the bb spindle which I got rid of by tightening the nut on the spindle but the sound is still there. It happens more so when I'm pedalling slowly rather than keeping a constant forward pressure whilst pedalling fast. Any ideas?
Just lube between the pedal and crank? If it's happening while you're accelerating that's because there's more strain. I often neglect this area and have heard this sound. Feels like BB but it's the pedal.

I bought one new and the crank arm is definitely attached to the chainring.
Mine looks like this though:

Had my back wheel nicked outside Barden's on Stoke Newington High St last night. As I locked up I thought "I wish I had two locks", OH GREAT
Oh, and for what it's worth, it's an Ambrosio (little blue sticker) silver rim with a black Bontrager Racelight 23" tyre, flip-flop hub, with an 18t cog and lockring.
I'm slightly excited about getting a new wheel but obviously wasn't prepared financially. If anyone can help me out with spares please let me know.

Mr Brown has a nice article here < http://www.sheldonbrown.com/fixed.html#tension > on how to get chain tension even
I take it there's no way of doing this, or any equivalent technique, if I have a vintage chainring with no stack bolts?

To the guy whistling to your personal stereo, on what looked like a SS but with a Sturmey Archer(?) hub, most of the way down Kingsland Rd, 9.30pm... I didn't mean to appear to be racing you. I'm sorry. I would've told you this but I could literally hear your headphones over the traffic.
Nice / intriguing bike!
