If you dont have friends or anyone else with bike knowledge then building takes time as you teach yourself - forum peeps are friendly and will help you out but you gota learn on your own buddy.
Get yourself a off-the-peg - Inevitably, you need to crawl before you walk and will tumble and fall while you learn about your new bike. Then, add parts and learn more and customise bits slowly as you see fit.
I agree. I bought a Unacoster (or Unabomber as I prefer) and have replaced everything but the frame and brakes so far. Picked up a bike off ebay and now fixing it up as my first project. Oh, just put a "Wanted" sign up, if anyone has a chain set for sale give me a holla!
-
Hello all,
building up a new toy and need a chain set. Does anyone have a spare chain set (and cranks attached) knocking around or can recommend a cheap(ish) one. Looking to blow about £40-50 of my hard earned pay. open to offers or suggestions, 44t or closest match wins!
Be quick as got paid today and the cash probably won't last long.
To stick on a mid 80s Raleigh Record on a Reynolds 501 frame. As far as I know the bb is just a bog standard one

Hi,
I have taken these off my Raleigh that I'm doing up so if anyone fancies a set of handlebars, front brake, stem and riser let me know. Any questions fire away, looking for £25 plus - think thats a fair price but open to negotiationsBigger pictures are in my albums under my profile, they are in good condition apart from some scuffing where the bike was stored upside down
-
Hi all, I couldn't add the photos onto this for some reason but they are in my profile, I'll try adding again later but feel free to have a browse.
Here is a link to them http://www.londonfgss.com/members6661-albums442.html

I had my first ride on it yesterday on the way home from work where i got it delivered. Didn't see a pot hole and double blow out as the inners are so old.Luckily I was in Grays Inn Road so £10 spent quickly in Condor sorted it.
I'll check measurements later, and if anyone can recommend someone/where I can get a rear flip flop wheel that would be amazing.
I've decided I don't like the handle bar/brakes on the bike, it didn't feel right to me. If anyone is interested in the handlebars and brake levers let me know, I'm going back to bull horn, i'll stick a picture up tomorrow if anyone is interested.
Off out for a bite to eat, in case anyone reads this who went on the ride today, brilliant seeing you all, a magnificent sight, despite the odd arsey taxi driver

Afternoon all, after bazzing about town on an off the shelf s/s and doing little bits and pieces to it along the way I thought I would do my own first build conversion.
I picked this Raleigh Sprint bike with a 501 frame off fleabay and so I was going to stick pictures/updates/ask for suggestions and help here.
Unless there are any objections and that won't be a suitable use for the forum?
So far the things I would like to do to it (in an ideal world where I have money) in no particular order:
New aero wheel set with Flip Flop wheel and hub with 15t fixed/16t free
42t Chain ring (black body and silver teeth)
New cranks
Powder coating - some sort of shiny/sparkly blackSoooo..... any thoughts, comments or ideas all welcome

what is a suitable grease for these sort of purposes, at the moment i've been using one i got from evans for greasing everythin, threads the lot.
is this stuff suitable, or have i been barking up the wrong tree?
Hmmmm, picked same stuff up from Cycle Surgery for £7.99. Bastards, thats £2 they owe me

I work in Holborn so I'll keep my eyes peeled........fnar fnar eyes peeled - monkey - get it? sigh - i'm wasting my talents here. The guy sounds a loon. Oh and on another Holborn notes the police bikes were ticketing people jumping the red light on corner of Chancery lane/holborn. And I mean the "proper" Chancery Lane, not the tube station lights

48 x 18, and a half link chain.
48x18 is the gear of the vert drop gods.
every single of the 3 ive converted have worked out just fine ( the first 2 before discovering the wonderment of half link chains).eccentric anything is too much money tbh.
Ello 'brows,
So it would be a fairly simple thing to do? This would be my first full build but i think i've fallen for the frame.
