I think i've decided its better to run without music. I completely agree it can keep you going when the feel shit but sometimes find myself zoning out and running to the beat and dropping my pace. Ran without it today and did loads better on the route than i've ever done. Ran Brighton marathon last year and they had a headphone ban (not that anyone pays any attention to it) and found I was paying attention to how I was running a lot more.

Yeah, I know it does much more as you say.
If you run set routes regularly & keep a training diary (takes just as long to punch numbers into a spreadsheet/website or write them down in a book, as it does to download data ;) ), exact distance isn't that important to measure progress as if you're getting faster / feeling easier over appx but constant distance then that's great!
Having a "virtual partner" strikes me as over rated too - just remember your PB, or look it up in training diary, and try to run faster (or whatever goal you set vs the training partner) - learn pacing on your routes by thinking about how you run over that course... In some ways virtual partner can be counter productive, as you could easily end up racing more training sessions, which from experience can lead to long injury layoff.
Additionally - if you rely too much on this stuff in training, and it fails on race day, you're fucked for that race.
That's my tuppence on GPS, and I'm no fan of compression fit technology, forefoot/barefoot running technology, super high mileage training plans, or much else that is often touted as the new thing either. Just call me grumpy.
Agree with the point about racing training session. When I know my PB and current pace all I wanna do is beat it. But I think for running new routes or areas its good to know how far you've been etc. I know running routes you've have experience on has advantages but for interests sake, its all about somewhere new.

Might do my local one again. Its a tiny affair, with say 25 completing the marathon distance and maybe 100 do the half. To save on water stations the route returns to the start/finish line at half marathon distance, and then as people clap and try to hand you a medal, t-shirt etc. you have say no thanks I want to do that again, and follow the same route on more time.
fecking soul destroying.
Fuck I am imagine that sucks. On the brighton one the half way point is right next to finish...pretty depressing to be halfway when people are finishing.

You'd think that, but actually a curved nose proves better than a wedge for subsonic flow, I think because there is a trade off between form drag and skin friction, so the shorter nose cone wins with less surface area. The optimum at cycling speeds is something like a tear drop with maximal thickness at about 1/3 of chord and overall chord:thickness of about 6:1, although this is not UCI legal. Trek have put a Kamm tail on (perhaps more accurately, cut it off), mostly to comply with regulations, so I think their tube has its maximal thickness behind the midpoint.
Yea thats right, there is too much surface on a double wedge so rounding off the front reduces the drag....didn't think i'd talk about aerospace related things on here!
