the train takes about three days - it's inevitably late! - but an amazing trip across Turkey and through northern Iran. It's not expensive- can't remember exactly. Probably about £80. Iran is amazing - one of the best places I've been. Young Iranians are waaay cool. Ended up finding a bike shop in Isfahan and hanging out with the three young guys who ran the place. The concept of a bike with no gears was a bit lost on them - but then they were selling bikes with names such as 'Cannondell'... western bikes are non existent there because of our helpful trade embargos

I can't imagine what you must be going through Giles but I hope that everyone's messages here bring some sort of comfort to you.
I'm almost scared to write anything in case it's deemed too shallow. But I honestly believe a ride could provide some sort of lasting legacy: ramming home the message to drivers of their responsibilities to other road users - but also reminding us that while taking to the road each day brings us such immense fun, some people have paid too high a price for that fun. It's at times like these that I honestly feel like giving up riding in London altogether. But then I always know I'll probably carry on.
I live in Camden and go to Ken High Street each day - I'd like to think Eilidh's and my paths crossed at some time.

thanks Fred - you may well be my saviour... even though you're in Bethnal Green (I guess?). And more than happy to dispense ale to ya.
I went down to the cop shop nearby and they did warn me that I could still be nicked for springing my own bike...oh well, c'est la vie. will a rechargeable AG get through an abus lock? -
cheers blackbeard
proving quite tough this... even if i find an angle grinder the manager at the pub (just five feet away) has said he won't let me run a power cable as he doesn't want to get involved... understandable as he has no reason to believe it's my bike. which is good in a way as I'd be a bit fucked off if he helped the first person who came along and claimed it was his bike.
aaaagggghh

Angle grinder... Ken High Street
Finally got round to registering... but sadly my first post is to ask for aid. Yesterday evening my key broke off IN the Abus D lock (admittedly I had been using the key for unconventional purposes last week and partly split it). Now my lovely fixie is marooned against a lamppost outside the Builders Arms just behind Ken High Street.
It might be suspicious that my firt post is to break open a lock... but it's genuinely mine. It's a lovely (to my mind, anyway) rebuild by Odge Wong over at London Fixed Gear just off brick lane. I'd have put up a pic to prove it but I've had to come into work (in Ken High St) and don't have pics on this mac. I do also of course possess hald the abus key which fits neatly (schazaam!-like) to the half hleft in the lock.
Anyone in the vicinity (today Saturday) to help release my bike?
As I said, it's park right outside the Builders so I can rush you a drink!
