I've just gotten hold of a 20" vintage Carlton frame and I would like everyone's opinion before I start spending money making a fixie of it. I am on a rather tight budget (300 quid?) so my intention is to start a build with a low cost vintage frame, then perhaps in half a year or so move most of the new parts (wheels etc) I will have purchased onto a a new frame. Plus I reckon I need some time riding fixie before I can make up my mind on the size and dimensions of the frame I'll eventually invest in.
I've attached a pic -which unfortunately is rather low resolution- but any chance I could get your opinion folks? I can't make out which model it is, but the badge on front definitely says Carlton.
All help is much appreciated.

Surely with a Prince reference, you should know all about inner thighs?
http://www.coloradocyclist.com/bikefit#inseamYep, the link you sent me suggests I "place a book ... between your legs ... and pull it up firmly into your crotch."
You're right.. with a Prince reference I should have known about the crotch firmness thing. Thanks! -

Thanks for responding guys. I am totally new to this.
Yep, the size was part of the appeal, I'm 5'7''. The seller says the frame is 19'' which would be the sort of thing I am after. When I try friend's bikes I find 20'' is the max for me, and it seems like most of the stuff being sold is 20'' and above. (then again I am new to the fixie thing).
I was going to have prof's replace the BB for me anyway, they'll be able to remove the old parts right?
OK, so hub spacing is a real concern, I'd hate to be limited in my choice of wheels. What width should I ideally have?

Puch Pacemaker, unknown year. What are your opinions?
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=180323890214I am thinking of this one for my first Fixie project. I.e. do the thing they seem to do in America a lot where they start with a shit frame, get all new parts like pricey wheels etc, then move these things onto a nicer frame when you have some more cash.
How much would you spend on the Puch?
Can you think of any caveats when it comes to eventually move the new parts I am thinking of adding to this one onto a 'proper' racing frame at a later point?
There seems to be a wide range of Puch models, anyone knows anything about the 'Pacemaker'? -

First post!
I know it's a bit random of me to post to this thread and for all I know everyone has stopped reading it by now, but here goes:I am trying to work out the solution you are using for the front crankset/chainwheel. I am currently doing my best to convert a MTB to SS and I am struggling to find a single chainwheel solution for the BB.
Looking at my MTB frame it seems that the chainwheels have to protrude quite a bit to avoid crashing into the chainstays, which means I am forced to stick to the heavy and ugly 3 chainwheel crankset that came with the MTB. If there is a way around this please help me out. I've been looking for threads on this topic without much luck. And perhaps someone could mention some product names?
Thanks!

Sure! :-) I'll get in touch with you later.
