It depends on your position. Personally, I find hanging the bag from the saddle alone means the bag hits my thighs. Using one of the carrier attachments clears the bag away from your legs and stops the swinging; and of course you need a Brooks with saddle bag loops
Get the biggest bag Carradice do, which is I think still the double flap camper.
And here is the link

My advice , based on my experience as a tourist , would be
If you are not using pannoers -then use a Carradice Super Camper Saddlebag. that's their biggest one
Fit a rack or use one of the Carracdice supports for the saddle bag . Don't just hang it off the saddle. You can can also strap items to the saddle bag, usually stuff like a waterproof. TheA bar bag at the front - Carradice to match- this can be used for maps, valuable etc
Might be worth using a camel back for drinks- if you don't have bottle cages.
Lights- either battery ones or a hub powered dynamo.
Mudguards, full or otherwise
If you are going to take a tent, then you will really need panniers and then perhaps a different bike.

as i mentioned
Suggestion
We get off the forum and onto the streets by running a campaign to educate our fellow cyclists , its called peer education.
It might involve designing a good clear leaflet and other media, e g cakes based on the message " don't go up the inside " or some thing similar. But it must be simple
We , and any one else from LCC, CTC , etc who wants to join in, spend 1/2 an hour one morning at one of the junctions in London ( eg Dalston Lane and the Balls Pond Road ) and use the leaflet and cakes to get the message a cross .
Oh and build in some before and after data collection in to see if it made any difference to the knowledge of the risks .

Thats true
These Majestics were equivalent to a Dawes Galaxy and Tourists either rode them or went up to hand built/ own brand models. The next model down would have been a Falcon Black Diamond. I am talking about 1980 -84 here. These and one or two later models are the last of the "good " claude butlers. I think the Dalesman is a not bad tourer.
The standard rig for a Majectic would be with a Karrimor frame and Green Karrimor bags . I took one to Brittany on camping tour.
Holdsworth bikes were the next model up in the then Holdsworth range. Holdsworth disapeaered in the mid 80s and became part of the Falcon empire .
The Majestics were not bad touring 531 frames, but with no brazes ons at all . Brazes on fitting were what you paid frame builders to do .
Thats why when Mountain Bikes appeared in 84, with cantlivers, better equipment, and lots of braze on fittings for a hundred quid more , then traditional touring bikes took a nose dive. It also spelt the dealth knell for centre pulls

Thanks
Peter Carter is a character in the film " A Matter of Life and Death "
Lots of bikes in the early parts of the film and a 1940s club runWhy am I doing this ?
1 ) I don't have the time to do ebay properly.
2 ) Jumbles I can get to are few and far between
3 ) This is some thing different and more sociable
4) The parts need a " good home "
5) This is a more sociable way of doing it
6 ) Hilary Stone is not invited

Here 's the idea. I have a cellar load of stuff that I will never use and that some else could . I can't face ebay .
The items on sale ranges from stems(7 ) to pedals, from frames (3 ) to rear mechs
There are also 3 - 4 bikes.
So I am considering holding a saturday morning cycle jumble in my garden , entrance by invitation only.
There would do an inventory , so you need not waste a journey. There will be coffee and my daughters will sell you their excellent cakes . Money from the Cakes and Coffee will go to a Charity and my daughters.
I confess that I am slightly worried about having a horde of unknowns entering my house , hence I need to think through the invite process.
So if you would be interested in coming over one Sauturday moring in May to Walthamstow then please let me know. If there are enough of you I ll work up the project and announce a date ..
