As the initial question was addressed to 'older guys' I thought I better post up as I get my Freedom Pass next year (if I make it to next year), have been riding fixed for some time, live at the top of Crouch Hill and have a skinny pair of legs. I ride either 81, 75 or 72ish gi.
I have to say that I've never really got the connection between fixed and knee pain - I've always found bike set up/fit more important whether fixed or free, so it's always worth looking at that before changing gi.
Stay with what you have and htfu!

Hi P!mp - it's a late 60s(?) Claud Butler steel track frame (I assume Reynolds 531 by the feel but no markers) with Nervex lugs - original parts include Normandy hubs, Stronglight cranks/chainwheel and Cinelli Pista bars (may be later addition). Originally had Champion rims for tubs but changed these out for the ubiquitious Mavic Open Pros for clinchers.
Riding 48 X 16 (with flipflop 15) just about do-able for me as I live at the top of Crouch Hill.
Frame is a bit neglected - getting more and more Hammerite on it to cover up rust - maybe one day a proper respray is in order.
Also frame is a bit on the big side to what I prefer but it's a great ride!

Something similar happened to me about 6 months ago - got hit by a car pulling out from a junction, knocked me acrosss the road. Luckily cyclist behind immediately called police and ambulance while the driver was was saying "let me help you up, you'r OK aren't you." He just wanted to get away asap so I refused to get up until the ambulance arrived in case anything was broken (to hell with the traffic held up). Ambulance and police all turned up v. quickly, I was checked over in the ambulance complete with bike which I refused to leave in the road (this is off Holloway Road after all!) and was qiven a lift home by those kind policemen.
I was bruised and stiff the next day and confidence shaken.
As a victim of careless driving and driver w/o insurance (!), and this will probably happen to you, I was asked later how I would like this to proceed - eg 're-education' for the driver, caution or court summons. I am going for the court summons - no matter how 'nice' drivers appear I would always go for the strongest punishment. I was told that I may have to appear as a witness but this is unlikely.
Currently awaiting the outcome!

It certainly felt different - instead of one long stop at north-east corner - more stops but for shorter times going round was my impression; and for, the first that I can remember, red lights at the entrance to the Mall!
