Ah sorry, did not see my typo.......
It was locked outside my girl's place, to some railings, locked-up with a mini-d. They even took the lock - apparently the police say that is so forensics cannot find any prints. It was insured, so hopefully I will get a pay-out forthcoming.
Sorry to hear about your loss, worrying they got the bike with the mini-d too. I know it can be cut with a axle grinder but didnt think it happens too much. did they cut the railings or the mini-d?

Have we met mastershredder? What bike you riding?
Skidding is overated, its just embarassing & spazzy when you see a 14yearold kev do it on a toys r us full springer.
That said, id be happy to come on a roll around, hit some car parks and help you with skidding techniques. Its really very easy, the skill comes in stopping effectively when at speed (dry or wet)
If you are who I think you are then yeah, you know me. I ride a grey powdercoated sweet road conversion, which you help put together, its niiiice.
post work (6ish) sounds perfect. what days are good for people? hows thursday next week (weather pending*)?
*I heard its gonna get mega cold and snow early next week but who knows...
-
hey does anyone wanna meet up on an evening (its getting lighter) next week or the week after and find a quiet slick/smooth car park around town to practice skidding?
I'm not interested in using it to stop in traffic, I have a front brake for that, just wanna get my technique down and and have fun on bikes.
any good car parks recommendations would be appreciated. thanks!

what was your stumpjumper locked with?
I personally dont think its a big problem in this city, though I have been a little getting paranoid lately...i use a shackle lock, think my bike will be fine with that.
There's a few fella's knockin' around town that like a tickle now and then. I had my Stumpjumper nicked from outside CycleSurgery last year, and I've had one or two "run-ins" with some local scallies.
I've not been here long enough to know if it's bad or not, but i have no time for thieves. I just wanna smash 'em up. I have no tolerance. -
A friend recently got his biked nicked from an indoor 'CCTV-ed' car park in the middle of town. It was only locked with a combination lock but it got me thinking is bike theft a worry or on the rise in bham?
What are peoples view on bham bike theft? Has anyone had anything nicked?
Will talking about it promote bad karma??....

O.K.
How about this...
Lets all get a location sorted. We meet up on ANY evening this coming week, and all get an idea of who can make what - and who wants to meet when? This could be weekly, fortnightly or monthly.I can't meet up any night next week (damn commitments), i guess you know what i think but just incase, monthly on a friday night is what i suggest and best for me but thats just me. let me know how this goes.
-
Well, how about we do something on the third friday of every month, so it's CM on the first Friday and then this on the third. After thinking about it more, I agree with mastershredder, having more of a proper organised event first would be much better. It's just a matter of working out what to do. Races, alleycats, joustingskid/trackstand competitions, tricks all spring to mind.
yeah i was also thinking of non-track/fixed gear specific things like, (getting a bit creative but..):
-a masks ride
-north bham ride
-west, east and south rides too
-playing tig (tag) on bikes (can think up the rules later)
-ride to the lickeys/sutton park
-put names of birmingham areas in a hat and pick them out to make up the route.
-if someone had a projector, someone else bring speakers, someone else a charged laptop etc, could find a spot/wall to show some short bike filmsall of these could end in the pub or whatever else. i dont know, these are just some ideas to explore parts of the city one would never usually ride in, meet new people, make every night unique.
I know its winter (I haven't rode as much as I've wanted to either) but i dont think just because the weather is good that everyone will magically come out. people have other commitments too. don't wanna seem like i'm critising, just being real.

I wrote a reply to this at work but by the time i clicked on 'reply' it asked me to logged back in and i lost my message. balls. so trying to remember my points:
i think the reason the weekly ride died so quickly because it was so 'regular' that it didnt seem like anything special. I'm all for ending at a pub/bar/club but if its just going to be a small quick ride then hitting the pub for the night, i dont see how thats much different from bham CM, which for me has got kinda dull.
personally i think it'd be better as a monthly night rather than a bi-monthly (initally). I say that because looking at smaller places like seattle that have had their events/scene/whatever grow they started with a monthly thing and it grown from there.
that gives enough time to plan stuff and would make people change plans/put more effort in to attend. also it gives time for people to think of more creative activities/rides/games/ideas/flyers even, generally get more people into it and pumped for it when it happens, making it a good night rather than just another ride.
-
i think if this was going to properly be a regular thing an evening would be better. thursday or friday evenings, 6 or 7ish?
think it'd be a good way to get rid of a weeks worth of work stress, party and not have it potentially take up a whole day of the weekend. just my 2cents.
by the way, hi. i know a few people off here but hello to those who i dont.
-
go for it, my girlfriend just brought one yesterday, told her it's the best lock to get.
is that in reference to the evo mini or the NY mini u lock?
is my gf's current security setup skating on thin ice or is it enough? if i had to get another u lock i'd prefer another evo mini to be honest. i havent heard of anyone having the mini evo broken into. seems a legit option.
-
Hi don't want to hijack the thread but which is stronger/better a mini evo or a abus steel o flex 1000 cable?
I ask because I was in london this weekend and saw how many bikes are locked up with the abus and thought the mini would be a more (cheaper) secure choice??
my gf who now lives and rides in london uses a mini evo for back wheel (sheldon style) and a krytoflex cable and pitlocks for front wheel. is this enough? im thinking of getting her a new york mini or another evo mini. has anyone had a biked nicked with an evo mini?

I'd love to but as im birmingham in the week days I wont be able to but im up for the occasional saturday ride if there happens to be one, would be good to meet some riders round there.
Also, does anyone know where the good bike shops (good in terms of service, repairs, etc) are round west london? (closer to hammersmith the better).
hey you two, welcome, we got quite a few riders around that part of west london, always going for the odd ride, come to west beers on a thurs and meet a load of us.
-
cool man, well if you fancy meeting up for ride in either city give me shout :)
london ride early feb?
Cool. most of my travels are also along fairly familier routes - commute across town and getting to friends etc. Could be fun just to get lost for a while, as it were.
And I should be back in Brum as well in a week or two, but will be riding my geared bike..

Hi all, I'm new here too. just registered.
Been riding fixed for about 12-18 months now in birmingham. i got my frame for £5 (an old claude bultler road frame) which i got powdercoated. its a sweet sweet ride.
my gf recently moved down to london (hammersmith) so i am down there half my weekends in a given month. take my bike when i can or when hell hasn't frozen over.
is anyone on here round hammersmith/west london fancy a ride sometime? would be good to get familiar with surroundings or go exploring round those parts. peace

Hi I was wondering what combo of u locks you would choose. I have an evo mini right now for quick stops and was wondering whether to go for another evo or go for the fah lock as a 2nd lock for all day locking.
These will be mainly used for locking up all day in West London (leaving the 2nd lock at work). Would you feel confident leaving your bike all day with 2 evo minis?
If a bike thief can get through an evo mini, does the fah mini u lock provide much more protection (say from an axle grinder)? I know the fah is obviously stronger but im thinking in terms of tools and whether the extra 30 odd quid is worth it.
Any insights would be greatly appreciated (I’ve searched already on the forums)
Thank you good peeps!
