he was let go because the license is road legal but he needs to get it changed so he can get insurance which is why he was so angry I think

what should a cyclist do if they damage a car ?
(surly you have to go through the proper channels to arrange payment for any damages, not just on the street)

sorry this is a bit complicated but i would like some advice from more knowledgeable road users

on the way to work this morning I clipped the back light of a car (it was stationary totally my fault)

I stopped, the guy got out the car and he started shouting at me and told me I would cost at over £150 to replace

I offered my contact details and said I would pay, he said I could be lying and that wasn't good enough

So I said lets move out of the road and talk about it

he got back in his car and I crossed the road

while I was waiting I got really scared and half-heartedly tried to ride away (he was a big guy and very intimidating)

he caught up with me and continued shouting I stopped and he started to wrestle my bike out of my hands

Luckily 3 plain clothes police came to my assistance and asked us to exchange details (credit to them as they were very level headed about the whole thing)

while we exchanged details they ran a check on his foreign license turned out he hadn't got a uk license which he needed as he had been driving in the country since 2003
so I was free to go and he cant claim any money which is nice

SO my question is what should have I done ?
I know what I did was wrong but what would have been the correct course of action ?
I'm not looking for vindication feel free to be as critical as you like

someone clever once told me use the same brand of clear coat as the paint you use because sometimes brands chemically react differently

didn't search headclip on ebay because I didn't know the term i tried 1940s headset but unfortunately that did not yield any results

mine isn't branded charter lea I think its a cheaper more generic copy. The frame doesn't seam that high quality but its good enough with nice lugs and tiny brass lubrication caps anyway I'm turning it in to a SS and I'm trying to keep the parts sympathetic to its age (except the wheels)

what do you guys think about keeping the head clip?

I was gonna put on a normal more modern headset as this will be my commuting bike

are head clips reliable? it seemed a bit wobbely

a good tip is to tighten two nuts against each other to stop them from slipping while you work

this will provide a rock solid point from which to work

been riding ss for a while and I know my way round a bike but I joined up cos recently I've been upgrading parts and found my knowledge lacking in some areas

anyway seems like a good forum

maybe ill come to one of the south east drinks when I get a bit more knowledgeable

had this issue with some relay old forks filed them carefully and they fit no problem

is there anything safety wise to watch out for after doing this?

i spent 35 on my old beet up steel frame and forks but so ar over the years I have spent about 50 on parts and 90 on wheels but I'm a skin flint

i did this with some old chromed steel forks

i used a set of good metal drill bits and masked off the area around where i was going and it worked like a charm

just go really carefully and steady and don't rush from a small to large hole
